I'm concerned for the emotional shock you may experience going from an 05 Taurus to a model Y.

I double that it will materialized, or you may wait for quite long time. It looks like that the demand is very high and the production can not keep pace. There is no incentive for Tesla to lower the price.

Tesla has gone through the mass production pains and learned from it. Combine that with it mostly being a Model 3, then it's not a completely new car like the 3

Demand was higher for the Model 3 and the price dropped. How many pre-orders for Model 3? 450K? How many for Model Y?

Based on my low 5K VIN on the S, I'd have no problem with an early Y. I purchased right after the ramp up to volume production.

The price drop for Model 3 may be related to the federal tax credit. It is not the case for Model Y.

Our timeline will be to start thinking about buying a new car in the Spring of 2021. By then the wife's minivan will be ready to be replaced (nearing 200,000 around that time), and she is interested in checking it out once they are in the wild. She won't 100% commit yet, but at least she will give it a look when the time comes.

Ordered LR RWD 5 Seater. Not concerned about build as it's mostly a Model 3 which I believe they have gotten down pretty well. It will replace the Model S we already sold. Currently a one car family which is fine as I live about half a mile from work so I walk.

Last full charge was 318 miles at 18k miles. When I first got the car Tesla stated range was 310 miles for a long range RWD model.
Tesla announced owners would get an upgrade to 325 miles which happened to some but probably a minority of owners with this configuration.
I charge to 80% daily and have never super charged. Use 18" aeros for my winter tires and 18" turbine wheel the rest of the year. Overall WH/mi is 255 with winter averaging much higher.
Even temperatures in the 50's affect range..
