Speed. Particularly highway speed. That's the dominant thing.
The car actually doesn't mind accelerating and then regenerating 90+% of that energy rapidly between stop signs. Smoothness is nice, and of course you want to stay out of the brakes. But speed eats battery. Period. The end. There is no regenerating wind resistance losses.
