So I'm sure everyone is aware there is tons of looting going around. But I was surprised looters took it to another level and stole a bunch of brand new cars from a Dodge dealership in North CA. And all they had to do was break into a safe and take the keys and drive off with the most expensive car they can find. Its like to the point a wannabe thug who only shoplifted a few shoes can now get a car instead. Why would the dealership leave car keys inside their dealership if they were gonna be closed during the pandemic and no employee will be present much to watch over things?
I would have thought those car dealerships would have done much more than just keep a bunch of keys in a safe. Especially when alot of them were closed and didn't have anyone around. Dealership could have taken the car keys to an offsite office location. Or take the batteries out. Or owner could have taken the keys to his / her own house. Or hide the keys in an attic or inside the walls of the buildings which at that point would force looters to stick around longer which they wanna avoid.
Since Teslas don't require traditional car keys, does that mean the showrooms and delivery locations can protect themselves against thieves / looters? Think they could be tracked like an iPhone, can they do what Apple did and make their cars useless if they know the vin or serial number of what cars were stolen? But then, I feel Tesla could protect themselves before an stealing happened and make their cars immobile / useless while they sit inside a parking lot / inventory area.
Thankfully all the Teslas are safe from the looters for now. I just hope not having a traditional car key like Dodge is what deterred thieves from considering stealing Teslas.
