...Tesla's whole premise was to accelerate the inevitable transition.

I see what you did there lol
Of course, Tesla did more than just swap the powerplant, they chose to re-think the entire driving experience. Fully autonomous driving? Complete touch screen controls? Dog mode?? Teslas have features not found elsewhere, and have challenged industry paradigms that were previously unassailable (like implementing the direct-sales model).

In all honesty I didn't get into this to save anything or stop using fuel.

A few years back, Bjorn's videos of his adventures with his Model S piqued my interest and I kept getting drawn into this world. I've always dreamed of a high tech, well built, silent, futuristic car which would be able to drive mostly by itself.

When I got to the point that I could actually get one, a used Model S came close enough to checking most of the boxes in my list. I do enjoy driving it now but no matter what I do, I can't get over the feeling that for the same money, I would have enjoyed way more a better built ICE/hybrid car with a nicer ride and interior to which I could just add the comma.ai system and get AP1 level driver aids.

My wife liked the performance of the X and wanted a Model 3 when they were first announced. Being cheap, she wanted to go with the base version. But when the AWD came out and white seats became available she jumped on that before the tax credits dropped. She picked up the $2k performance upgrade when it became available. We should probably have bought the Performance!

While I like the environmental aspects of the cars, and the lack of smell, it was performance and home fueling that motivated us.

Me too!
And the wife refused to let me order her the performance, said she would kill herself having fun with it. ;)

I suggest you test drive a newer Tesla. I had some of those early versions as loaners and wonder why anyone said they were awesome.

I few months ago I used Turo to rent a Model 3 Performance. The host pulled up, tossed me the keycard, and sped away in another vehicle. This left me standing in front of National Airport, horns honking, with me going "hey, umm, how does this thing work?"

I think even "I" would have been struggling with that intro! The controls are a bit different from the X and it took me a while to adjust to the 3.

And yes, even in my plain X it took a month before I could launch without jerking the steering wheel.

Yeah, there were EVs a hundred years ago. It took that long for batteries to get good enough to provide ICE competitive range per fill.
Tesla saw that battery tech was getting to the point of making EVs into mainstream vehicles and built a whole company around that idea.
The internal combustion industry scoffed..."we tried that before"... but didn't realize that the tipping point for EVs to displace ICE vehicles was here.
Tesla's whole premise was to accelerate the inevitable transition.
(Meanwhile they also proved that a startup can do world class safety, styling, comfort, aero, and all the other things someone might want in a vehicle.)

Yeah, so many talking points in your reply, but I will limit mine to: I bought the X because I couldn't wait any longer for the 3 (RN# 32,XXX stood in line), and I wanted to give as much operating capitol as I could afford to Tesla at the time (while getting a fun car).

Yes, fun. Literally the first thing we did when taking delivery is make the specialist move it outdoors and play the Merry X-mas Easter egg. (Still have the video)

S**t! It's rough with K-Jetronic. For 50% owners it works perfect - the other 50% it's sketchy. The community has been patiently waiting for the "new" cars rumored to have a Ford V6 and 100K price tag but only time will tell.

I've only seen one electric Delorean worth a damn - it was at SEMA 2019.

If you are a do-it yourselfer, check out Plasma Boy and how he made Zombie.

If you have the money, talk to RichRebuilds - he puts salvaged Teslas back on the road.
