how many inch of snow on ground will make rwd undriveable?

How long is a piece of string? I depends on the ground clearance, which you can measure, and the tires and wheels. Generally the lower the profile of the tire, the worse it will perform in low traction conditions.

I never measured, but last winter I would say I was able to drive through 5-6" of fresh snow without a problem.
RWD with Continental Viking Contact tires.

I ran this same set up in Central New York with very good success. As others have said, what type of snow plays a huge roll. If it were 8" of lake effect snow on a 20F day, I would head out and not worry too much. If it were 5" of wet snow at 34F I wouldn't even thing about it. This is the first RWD only car I've ever owned and didn't find it any better or worse than any other 2WD car I've ever owned, the dynamics are just a little different.
