How many roadsters were built with the Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57 Head Unit?
In researching my purchase of roadster #268 I asked two of my co-workers, that were ex Tesla employees, for information about the Roadster to help me decide on the purchase. An interesting tidbit is that one person who worked in purchasing mentioned how he had bought a bunch of Blaupunkt Hamburg mp57 Head units destined to go into the roadsters until Elon heard of it, and that's where Blaupunkt got scrapped and the JVC head unit with navigation came into the picture. In the end they had a bunch of the BP head units laying around collecting dust....
I'm curious how many roadsters have these BP head units in them? Also what did they install before that model?
Really I'm happy I got this radio, I'm not to fond of having my navigation tied into my radio as well as placing the maps down off the road view. The roadster is already tight for space and moving around. I end up using my cell phone mounted on an adjustable window suction cup mount for the navigation and it works great! My phone is an HTC EVO 4G so the screen is a nice size too. I also use a program called WAZE which warns of hazards in the road which is essential for possibly saving yourself and the roadster's life! It also warns of police and speed traps, as well as traffic delays. Its built off a social reporting network so you also get added and contribute to the data pool. Best part its FREE and ported to Iphone, Android, and the Blackberry platforms.
so back to the Roadsters.... I'm curious as well about the change from an analog shift selector versus the more digital push button gear selector between the Roadster 1.5 and 2.0 generations. I'm more in favor of the analog shifter, I don't have to look down to move between forward/neutral/reverse to make my selection. Also the center console looks "right" in terms of its placement, feel, and layout of the knobs and buttons. It also looks more solid. The real shifter, simple head unit, and center console give a true "sports car" look and feel. Why did they switched if it looked good and worked? It also appears they removed the tray that lays below the dash for a closed clean look with a glove box. I find the tray really handy and easy to access. I place a couple of microfiber rags in there to take up space and keep things from sliding around in there. Possibly Elon's idea to change the console and dash layout too?
How do others like the push button shifting and JVC headunit / navigation in their 2.0+ roadsters? Have to admit I'm bias to the 1.5 design since that's the way my Tesla is setup
