In an attempt to understand how range charge behavior might affect pack longevity for the Model S, I'd like to gather some data on range charges.

In addition to participating in the poll, it would be helpful to know:

    • CAR NEW PURCHASE DATE:
    • CURRENT VEHICLE MILEAGE:
    • CURRENT RATED MILES @ 100%:
    • TOTAL # OF RANGE CHARGES:

Anything else pertinent you'd like to note as well, such as frequency of range charges (2/month, etc...), how long you leave the car at 100% before driving, how low of a SOC you've had to drive car to on those occasions, etc...

I had to range charge probably half a dozen times in the fist few months I had the car for trips. More superchargers have opened up around me, and I find I haven't had to for a while now.

I generally have been good about not letting the car sit at 100% for any length of time after a range charge. One exception is when I accidentally had not reset the battery slider and I found out late the next day it had sat for about 18 hours at 100%.

I've driven it down to 0 (actually -1) once after a range charge. On another occasion I got it down to about 3 miles, but that was after a standard charge.

    Purchase: Jan 2013
    Miles: ~38,000 miles
Rated @100%: 256 miles (August 2014, with my last 100% charge).
    # Range: ~15-20, about 1/2 driving within 30 minutes of hitting 100%. One lasting ~36 hours @100% (messed up like you did). All others less than 6 hours at 100%.

I've driven to single digit remaining miles ~4 times (lowest was 2). It gets driven to yellow ~2 times a week for the past month, and will be driven to yellow 2 times a week until May 2015. I have driven to yellow ~20-30 times total, not including the twice weekly number.

A lot of my justification of getting the 85kWh over the 40kWh version was that I would do a few trips a year in the 85kWh pack. I'm not worried about degradation due to use at all.

Typically leave the car on 100% less than 10 minutes before I drive off.

About half of range charges were on SCs. Next highest is on UMC at 40A or J1772 at home at 30A Oh, and it's an S85.

Charged it to 100% about 10 times in 9 months. About half those times, it was by mistake - by fiddling around with the cellphone app and leaving it on "max" prior to a scheduled charge. Then it charged up to 100% without me requiring it. <facepalm>

About twice, I've left it for about a day at full charge before driving it. (the worst possible behaviour, I understand)

Over nine months the 100% range has gone from 269 miles to 262.

(the 80% mark would therefore be at 215 miles)

I have become a great deal more careful about charging it to max these days.

Only have fully charged it when on a road trip earlier this year. Normally I keep the car between 30-70 % charged and live in a temperate climate. Haven't really seen any degradation yet.

Mine's a service loaner so I'd have to go back and look at the build date, but I took ownership Halloween 2013.

CAR NEW PURCHASE DATE: N/A (VIN 11-12k)
    CURRENT VEHICLE MILEAGE: 21,000 miles
    CURRENT RATED MILES @ 100%: 257
    CURRENT RATED MILES @ 90%: 226
TOTAL # OF RANGE CHARGES: 10 or so (but could've been more as a loaner)

I usually charge to 80-90% daily. When it gets really hot out, I charge to 80%. As things cool down, I charge to 90%. This is because heat as harder on the battery, but cold means you use more energy... Rather than trying to keep SOC as low as I can possibly stand like some people, I'd rather have the spare reserve in case something comes up and I need to do more driving after work, etc than I anticipated. Also because I only have the single mobile charger and I don't bring it with me unless I'm going on a real road trip

At first I thought my range was dropping a tad faster than most, but now I seem to be right in line with the mean/mode

I did a range charge for a group outing with the Tesla AZ owners. The others were all related to driving from Phoenix to Denver. I didn't need to do range charges, but I wanted to quell the range anxiety especially when driving in the cold and up to altitude.

I wonder whether we should be looking at IDEAL miles instead of RATED miles. Granted, I remember IDEAL vs. RATED, but the only absolute number is the IDEAL miles, right? That takes a constant rate vs. measured rate from the past however many miles of driving habit.

My wife's question to me of "how aggressively was I driving her Roadster Yesterday" comes to mind as we had a >40 mile difference in RATED vs what she normally sees in her car (shall I say I was "busted" for having fun with her car.)

The question is: Does is count as a range charge if you are in the "trip" section of the slider?
I've never done a range charge where I've let it sit.

Do we need to know what firmware version one is using when quoting 100% Rated miles, since I think there may have been some tweaks to the formula that could affect the figure?

I have range charged when on trips since the car was new; I never let the car sit at 100% for more than a few minutes. Typically I charge to 85% for local driving and plug it in every night.

I have never done a range charge and always charge to 80%. The Typical range has dropped from the original 325km to 322km at 80%.

    Firmware 5.9.
