Just saw this video when the interviewer asked Sandy Munro how many years is Tesla ahead of the competition (the whole video is long but he popped the question near the beginning):

I did not want to spoil the fun really (I agree it could be hard to watch as the interviewer is not a native speaker of English, but it’s part of the fun), and you need to hear the reasons why he said what he said. The short answer is many years considering putting things into mass production is very hard!

Thank you. And I think that perspective is well known. Certainly Elon has said many many times that making a great prototype vehicle is relatively easy compared to how hard it is to make hundreds of thousands of copies at a high level of quality.
