How much energy do the daytime running lights really use?

Why does Range Mode turn off DRLs? They’re undoubtedly a safety feature, and I can’t imagine they use very much energy. Does anyone know what the draw is from them? It just seems silly and dangerous to turn off a safety feature of all things when preserving range.
