How to play Skyforce Reloaded in Two Player mode?

The game says it supports 1-2 players. I have 2 gamepads and I know they work because I can play Beach Buggy Racing 2 in 2 player mode.
But how do you get Skyforce Reloaded to play in 2 player mode?

Try trying this... In the middle of the controller there are 3 small buttons. When the game is starting hit the one to the far right. Mine kept starting at 2 players and I only have 1 controller and kept messing with buttons and that one put it to 1 player.

When the level is starting hit A or whatever button is A on your controller on players 2's controller. The second ship will show up and then you can start the level.
