At the beginning the talking head says Tesla Autopilot crashes are being investigated. Then, the talking head proceeds to describe that some death of a Tesla driver is blamed at Tesla (of course). And THEN, at the very end, the talking head mentions that by the way investigators don't believe the Autopilot was involved in this death. This is on par with claims that Russia did not invade Ukraine, it's all Ukraine fault somehow. Please please, America, don't become Russia!

I understand that for a wife this is a very tragic event, but blatantly ignoring that the doctor's blood alcohol was over the legal limit and could be a main contributing factor does not seem to come out in this story. The perils of being a pioneer in EVs where everything is battery driven. I hope that such tragic incidents leads to better safety and design from all car manufacturers.

...blamed at Tesla (of course)...
The reporter said in an accident, the door handles would come out but not in this case because of the disruption in power.

It's true that the driver was at fault but the autopsy didn't find the cause of death was from the impact of the collision.

The uncooperating door handles that refused to extend out from their hidden position after a collision are problematic.

The Jurors will have to decide on whether the non-extending door handles after an accident is a brilliant design not just from an aerodynamic viewpoint but also from a safety standpoint in a survivable impact.

We can discuss the door handles all day long (see below), but that discussion would only emphasize my point that every story about Tesla no matter how unrelated it is to the Autopilot begins these days with the announcement of the number of Tesla on Autopilot crashing and killing people ... which I find a pure manipulation of public opinion.

Now to the door handles.

Other brands too make vehicles with electrically-actuated doors. Consider our lovely Ford Mach-E for one.

I don't really know the details, but it would be reasonable to assume that either the driver was unconscious or the door(s) was mechanically deformed and could not be opened from inside.

Why would anyone assume that with a normal door handle it will be easy to open the door after a major crash? Is it really that impossible to break the window?

They said they could not break the glass.

It might be very true that due to the impact, the deformed doors would not open mechanically even in a traditional always-available-door-handles.

However, always-available-door-handles design is not blamed in these cases because they are visible.

On the other hand, the reporter clearly said the door handles were to extend out in a collision but they did not.

The jurors will decide on that kind of design.

Of course any car companies that follow Tesla's design will risk a law suit when they don't work as designed.

They didn’t say anything about the door windows, just the windshield (which is required by law to be shatter resistant). He had a blood alcohol limit above the legal limit. He was speeding. He want wearing a seatbelt. No mention of whether he tried opening the door from the inside.

Exotics, Mercedes, and even Ford don’t have door handles that can be pulled from the outside unless electronically actuated.
