HPWC Amp and Wire Specifications

Good thoughts everyone. My main service is only a 150. Otherwise, I might have gone with the bigger breaker. Plus, I have 2 A/Cs and my Volt charger still! I think I'm ok since my Volt + 2 A/Cs was ONLY pulling 36 amps when I checked it. I just don't want to push it....

SW2Fiddler, what public charging station do you know of that's > 40A? You know the Superchargers bypass the onboard chargers anyway. I'd rather have the SAS than the dual chargers! :)

Charging Time. Arguably, the single possible compromise/limitation/downside of an amazing car ownership experience. Why anyone would not want to minimize this as much as possible, why even Tesla Product Specialists have been heard to advise against a second charger, maximizing - future-proofing - the car's charging capability, I just cannot fathom. At least the dual-charger option is no longer a Get-It-At-Factory-Or-Regret-It decision; you have lots of time before and after baby's delivery :)

I'll answer your question with where my Duals should help out (me, and Anyone Waiting For Me To Finish) on a hypothetical trip towards your area. Does not even list non-Tesla >30A spots like Sun Country Highway, which are still increasing. Many Tesla owners find they do want to travel MUCH more than they did in their previous cars.
I would be shocked if this list ain't about doubled by your Model S's first birthday, too:

One quote and I am off the soapbox...
Frequently stated at the Houston Galleria HPWC and HPC: "But I only got Single Charger, or I'd be done sooner. Sorry!"

You've only scratched the surface.

This shows 53 public HPWCs in Florida

This shows an additional 57 private HPWC in Florida owned by people willing to share their chargers.

FTE Charging Network.jpg

This is a map of our Club's Private Charging Network. 28 of these locations have HPWCs.
Chris is a member of our club and will have access to them if he joins the network.

In addition, here in Florida we have a "boots-on-the-ground" local Tesla representative whose sole function is to rapidly expand the Tesla Destination Charging network.
I frequently collaborate with him in feeding him warm leads. In turn I have hundreds of club members feeding me suggested locations.

Destination charging is the most economical means of expanding a charging network suitable to Model Ss.

A second on-board charger will be even more useful in the future to fully exploit this rapidly growing HPWC network.

now that you have 95A rated THHN, you might consider buying a 70A breaker, if your panel can support the load, in case you have a visitor with a dual charger...

For most non-commercial applications, I typically just quote the 75 deg column, since residential equipment terminations are only rated at 75 deg, so 85A limit. 80A breaker would be best there.

Remember to add 20% for continuous use. For a 50 amp breaker I would use #6.
Actually, just to keep the math correct when calculating the circuit size from the charging rate, you add 25% to the charge rate to get the breaker size. For example, for an 40a charge rate you add 25% of 40a, or 10a to get a 50a circuit. You subtract 20% from the breaker size to get the maximum charge rate. 20% of a 50a circuit is 10a, and 50-20 is 40a.

Larry, is there any indication which are 40 and 80 amp HPWCs? I would imagine not. With the availability of the SCs in Florida, I'm not at all worried about charging infrastructure.

Again, if my main was a 200, I would seriously consider the dual chargers and up'ing my breaker since the wiring is ready for the 80 amps. But, upgrading the main panel to a 200 amp service is like another $2k.

Hi Chris,

No we don't have definitive summary information on which are less that full capacity, but it has been my experience that most installations wire the HPWC to handle the maximum amps. Obviously, most of the commercial installations are going to start out with a no-load voltage at around 208 volt, since they are 3-phase, and under load they may dip below 200 volts thereby reducing the overall capacity, but still should deliver more than 50 mph with dual on-board chargers. As you know at most typical public chargers you are lucky to get 18 mph.

True, Florida has the second most Superchargers behind California....waaay behind California. However, there currently remains serious holes in the network, in the Panhandle, the Miami and Jacksonville areas, and particularly for those that have 60 or 70 kWh batteries.

I appreciate the valid reasons for your decision, but thought it was important to support SW2Fiddler's point about the importance of destination charging in supplementing the Supercharger network for others Floridians following this thread who may not have a home capacity constraint. It wasn't until I had a conversation with a Tesla manager involved in the Supercharger network that I came to fully appreciate this point. He pointed out the fact, that if the destination charger is located at the place where you intended to go anyway, that it can frequently be more convenient than using a Supercharger.

Exactly!!

Destination Charging, or charging at home, while I sleep, takes much less of “My Time” than charging at a Supercharger.

I'm seeing less and less how this relates my home install as I'm not a bed and breakfast.

Like I said, if I had a 200 amp service, I would absolutely have put in the 80 amp service for the HPWC. But, I'm limited to the 150 and I've got 2 AC units AND my son's Volt on the panel.

I agree with you that destination charging is MORE important than SC charging. No doubt. We need to better educate businesses as to the benefits of putting in chargers - remember my Kohl's story? :)
