HPWC Install

To all,

I have a meme 14-50 connector and about to install my HPWC. I have attached the wiring at the plug so a little confused at how to wire the HPWC. The plug has a white, black and copper ground. How do I wire that into the HPWC? I have attached pictures.

I assume you are replacing the NEMA 14-50 with the HPWC. The white is the other line side, there is no neutral connected in that 14-50 pic but best to verify with a voltmeter to be 100% sure.

Most jurisdictions do not allow parallel sockets on the same circuit for high voltage/high current applications so if you wanted both you would need to wire separately.

See Flasher’s excellent FAQ in my sig for much more detail!

No, that's not a legit 14-50 that he started with. Probably installed by someone who knew that it was only being used for Tesla charging. If an RV plugged into this outlet, it would be using the uninsulated ground wire as the return side of the 120V circuits. That could give a shock to anyone who touched the conduit or anything that was supposed to be grounded in the RV.

Right now I am charging using a UMC to charge via the NEMA 14-50 outlet. If I go on a trip, I have to yank the UMC out of the NEMA outlet, and that is no easy task!!

Then, after having to evacuate because of the Woolsey Fire, I am considering getting a HPWC so I can keep the UMC in my car, and use the HPWC to charge daily, rather than having to plug and unplug the UMC. I have a 2018 MS 100D with the 72 amp charger upgrade. What does the 72amp upgrade do, exactly?

Does the HPWC have to be hard-wired in? I don't have a garage yet, so my NEMA 14-50 outlet is in a covered metal box attached to a 6'6" post. I leave the UMC plugged in until I need to go somewhere, and then I unplug it, coil it up and hang it on a hose holder.

What's the consensus on the HPWC? It's $500 for one with the 24' cord.

I see folks here using a plug of some kind--looks like it's connected at the back of the HPWC. I would have an electrician do it, so if there are any pix or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
