HW2 EZ-PASS Placement vs. cameras

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
Good morning,

I recently took delivery of a HW2 Model S. I placed my EZ-PASS transmitter below the rear-view mirror, but am concerned that it might interfere with one of the cameras. Would you please look at the attached photo and give your opinion.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

FWIW, especially for those in Florida, SunPass doesn't work in that location, at least not vertically. One of the service guys here in Orlando told me to try it in the horizontal position, as close to the headliner as possible.

I haven't tried it yet, as last week's update froze my nav screen and the car's in the shop.

Happy New Year everyone!

@cs04 I don't know if this scenario applies in NC and the EZ-PASS system, but I thought I'd share my experience from a couple days ago. I live in Chicago and IL uses the i-Pass system, similar (and the transponder works with EZ-PASS system) to the EZ-PASS. I also have AP1. When I first got the car, I ordered the front license plate mounted transponder. I then realized that that transponder doesn't mount very well to the license plate, and anyone could just simply unscrew and jack it if they want, effortlessly. So we stopped by one of the i-Pass customer service locations a couple days ago to exchange for a regular transponder (like the one you have now). The rep was super helpful. After hearing why I wanted to exchange and that it was for a Tesla, she went out to the car with me with a gadget to test out the regular transponder. She had me put the transponder to the right of the front camera / rear view mirror, partially within the black part of the windshield. Then she put her gadget outside opposite of the transponder. We made a couple minor adjustments of the final placement until she verified that it will work.

Anyway, moral of the story is, visit an EZ-PASS customer service location and ask them to physically test out the best transponder location in your car, instead of GUESSING where it should work. Good luck!

I am a new member as I just acquired an S 90D with AP2 (whenever it is uploaded). I placed my EZ-Pass (older square version) on the windshield to the right of the mirror as illustrated by luckyj. Went through Triborough bridge and Queens Mid-town tunnel. Worked perfectly!!!! Thanks luckyj.

The cameras are all inside the housing and mounted to the windshield. Unless you physically pry the housing off and jam it inside, I'm pretty sure no location will create issues for the Autopilot cameras.

Older Ss have a metallic coating on the windshield which interferes with the transponder signals and only a small zone to the right of the mirror which isn't coated. My X coatings are different, and the transponder seems to work fine anywhere on the window - I have mine way up over my head near the middle.

I'm not sure what the situation is for refresh Ss, but I've heard they might have the X coatings that don't block the signal.

EzTAG here in Texas. It is a sticker that goes in the same spot on the windshield by the mirror. However our system also lets you register your license plates. They can charge your account either by tag or license plates. All of our toll locations have front and back cameras.

I don't have my tesla yet but I plan on just using the license plate recognition. There is not additional fee here for letting them use the plates to track it. Maybe a phone call to your ez/fastpass office might let you know if they also do license plates?

I haven't picked up my S60 yet, but the specialists at the Dania Beach, FL store told me that the newest production models no longer have the windshield coating... two of them independently told me that transponders can be mounted anywhere. This was a somewhat big deal for me as I need both a SunPass and another transponder that opens the gates in our neighborhood - there's no non-sticker alternative for that one.

Works fine anywhere on the windshield for me. I picked mine up a week ago.
