That AlterNet article seems to be pinning its hopes on the price of natural gas not changing. They're forgetting that that's a fossil fuel, too, and supply is getting tight.

They should be checking the price of hydrogen formed from a renewable energy source.

They forgot to mention 2 important factors.
Storing of Hydrogen in small portable applications (i.e cars)
Energy efficiency compared to pure electric.

The reasons that electric vehicles is a lot better option NOW than any fuel cell vehicle.
It's as my professor at the University of Oslo's Chemistry department says: Hydrogen makes very energy rich compounds, the very reason there is much energy stored within Hydrogen. That same energy rich compound is very stable and thus you need lots of energy to get it out, and thus you end up with very little net energy. This is assuming you are not storing it directly as H2 which has it's own problems.
