I find that summon is very good at compensating for my alignment sloppiness. If you give it enough "run room" to maneuver is this careful initial set-up actually necessary?

Right. Yeah, AP1 summons does seem to do actual smart things. My attempts with AP2 summons appear to generate just backing straight up or pulling straight forward (but stopping short of a hard obstacle).

I've seen AP2 summon steer quite a lot when going around a curved driveway into the garage.
