Huge!!!

this country should have offered all sorts of incentives to build the factory here.
Could have been a massive win not just for jobs created directly, but the huge impact on the supply chain!

again bunch of divs running the country!!

Agree about the "divs" and I've voted for them all my life, well until recently. Time to quit the spin and fufil all the promises. I don't envy their task mind. Big old mess really.

Tesla openly stated that the instability of Brexit was the main reason for not coming although there's probably more to it than that. Whatever, a big missed opportunity :(

I heard, too, that the Berlin site was previously considered by BMW and had therefore already undergone a bunch of environmental impact studies that Tesla was able to leverage, thus saving them six months to a year.

Assume nothing. The deviousness of big business and governments is such that a statement saying brexit was involved could just have been part of the German deal for him to say that. It'll have come down to the best financial offer and bung v threats to supply chains and sales and investigations and may even have involved deals at gov level for unrelated businesses (taxes on foreign co's etc) as ell as concerns by rival manuacturers.

Andy Burnham is a sap, what sort of leader accepts that nearly is winning when half an economy is at stake ? They should have said HS2 will stop right outside and offered up the royal family taking orders from customers at the gates of the site, noting that Prince Philip would not be doing test drives.

Disappointing.

Bottom line is we didn't get it. UK feels a bit crap at the moment and trying to leverage on some misguided notion that we're still a power house. When the steelworks and factories don't re-open contrary to the promises made to Mrs Miggins from Redcar, then maybe we'll get some sense of proportion back. Until then strap in for the downward spiral :(

Tesla and Shanghai has the deal that from 2023, Tesla need at least pay USD $323 million tax a year. And invest at least USD $ 2 billion in the next 5 years. Otherwise, they will break the lease.

Not too sure the cost of land leasing. I would guess not too much. It will produce 500,000 Tesla cars a year.

Of course Brexit is a massive reason for not investing in the UK. A big attraction for big international business has previously been the unfettered access to the huge EU market. Even with a decent trade deal it is not going to be anything like as easy to have a European base here. Frictionless trade isn't possible with differing standards and procedures.

If the UK was really second then it will be next in line in Europe ...
@chewystuey

Not sure why people seem to tag my post disagree.

IF a person was in second place out of 50 for a job and wasn't chosen first time round and they were still available for a second job, they would likely be fairly high up for for the next position.

I don't think they were actually in second place though!

!

It also depends if they are suitable for the second position as it won't necessarily be the same as the first one

It all depends what bo jo, sorry, Dom Cum, does next.

the interesting this is, what Nissan have come out with.

before ‘brexit was done’ Nissan was all doom and gloom and pulling production out of the uk.
funnily enough now, dependent on the deal of course, they are considering moving. A LOT MORE production to the uk. Tariffs from japan + shipping+ lead times etc on the boats ( which we all no so much about on here!) may end up being more expensive than paying whatever tariff or not we have with Europe and shipping from us!
Obvs there will be no tariff at all if it’s built in the fatherland, but it may become an interesting time in the automotive supply chain if other automotive suppliers follow what Nissan are doing!

I’m not in the least bit surprised that we didn’t get it.

The last time the UK government threw lots of money at a USA car company to get them to come to the UK it didn’t end well - DMC DeLorean - Wikipedia

What with that, and the fact that over the last 40 years the UK car industry has done all it can to shoot itself in the foot, with endless union disputes and poor management, it was inevitable the Germans would get it.
