Well, I finally joined the Tesla ownership group yesterday picking up my Model Y in Boise. Delivery went fairly smooth, although I felt like they wanted to rush me a little since they had a few others scheduled as well. Felt a little cheated getting my car from Austin instead of Fremont since I didn't get the new Matrix lights (that they are now providing for a while), or the new door trim, and I didn't even get the mobile connector (just a voucher to have one shipped at a later date.) Also, since it was made in Austin I didn't get the small PPF patch or the mud flaps. (they said they will schedule an appointment, when they are back in stock.)

The car had a couple of flaws in the paint, but nothing to refuse over. Got it home and immediately went to work on the ceramic coating which I did myself. A big thanks to "csrpenfab" for all of the help with instruction and for leading towards the best product. I used "Avalon King" if anyone is interested, and it was fairly straight forward even for a novice like me. It was a little long (5hrs.) to complete all the steps. Wash, clay bar, iso alc, prep and then the application of the ceramic coating. It turned out great, and I am sure it will never look better than it does this morning. I will send pics in an upcoming post.

Love the car so far, however I am lost trying to apply all the tech. I am sure that will come with time. One thing I did get was one year of premium connectivity...I thought that was only one month? Oh well, I'll take it.

The 261 day wait is over. Let the adventure begin...
Congrats. I took delivery of a MYP a month ago and an Austin build MYLR two weeks ago. If you have a need for a mobile charger your welcome to borrow one of mine until yours comes in.

Wow...that is very nice of you! I may take you up on it. I was planning a quick trip to Lewiston and charging up there is a wasteland! In fact I was going to see if someone in our area had the CCS adapter that I could borrow for 3 days since the only high speed charger in the area is at the casino and it only takes CCS.

The casino has a Tesla Chademo adapter you can borrow (at the hotel front desk) and use at their Chargepoint charger.

No problem. I also have a ccs adapter that I will need over Labor Day weekend but after that you could borrow it as well.

Well I have had her for almost a full month and just got her back from the tinter/PPF guy. Have been enjoying every moment I can with her, that is when I can get it back from my wife who seems to be stealing it quite a bit. She has a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT that goes into production Monday. She insisted on going with the Mach-E cause it looks and feels like a "real car." I am eager to compare the two hopefully soon.

And yes, I may be the only guy with a Model Y performance that has all-terrain tires but I really wanted something I don't have to worry about for our winters. Not to mention our gravel and chip seal roads we have all over the place. The extra rubber feels great and I don't stress about curb rash when the wife steals her away from me.

Good looking car. What brand and size of tires did you go with?
What tires did it come with?
I am going to try to release my hold so my Y arrives early January. Probably the worst time to drive a Tesla for the first time.
I was even thinking of downsizing to an 18 inch wheel for a bigger tire.

You are right that learning to drive a RWD biased car in the snow is interesting. The car will start to fishtail when you make a turn, especially from a stop, and especially with the stock continentals. But! within a fraction of a second the electronics will correct the skid and your rear actually doesn't kick out as much as you think it will.

I know you didn't ask me, but we ended up getting Nokian 10 SUV studded tires (would have gotten the EV version which has foam insulation, but we were lucky to get any at all). Made a huge difference in the kick out, although it still could happen a little in the worst conditions.

I also considered getting higher sidewall tires/18s, but didn't want to mess around in February and really wanted the snow tires fast. Maybe when it comes time to replace them. Also, like @jstepy I will likely not be replacing my stock Conti's with the same tire when the time comes (probably in a year). I like the idea of an AT as well. We need summer winter tires as well as winter winter tires where we live :D.

By the way, if you are anticipating getting the car and have no doubts, I would recommend you get your snow tires ordered now. They were hard to get (especially if you had your heart set on a particular brand/style) after the first of the year.

Like many others I purchased them from T Sportline. They are awesome and have tons of different options. All wheels work with factory lugs etc. Check them out. They usually have great sales, I’d imagine Black Friday would be the next one.

Awesome and congratulations! That's great you got a year of connectivity! I only got the free month with my MYP delivered 3/22. I'm glad to hear your DIY with the Avalon King ceramic went smoothly (I told you it was easy! :)). Yes, it's a fair bit of work, but you just save yourself at least $1000!

I've got two bottles sitting on my workbench waiting for the arrival of a couple of new ICE toys. A used 2015 Porsche Boxster for my weekend "fun" car, and a 2023 Audi SQ8 for wife. Both will be getting the Avalon King ceramic ASAP! I'm 6 months in on my MYP and even with weekly car washes at Rocket, it's holding up perfectly!

Thank you for the reply.
I'm still pretty knew to the Tesla world and am surprised at something you said which I find a little disappointing. At the same time I suppose it makes sense especially on a LR model.

The MY is a RWD normally and the front motor only kicks in when the rear wheels slip? I'm glad it happens quickly.
I've driven vehicles like this before and am not a fan. Of course these where ICE vehicles. One of two things would happen. Either traction control would engage and the engine would greatly reduce power and engage the front wheels, or the front wheels would engage with a clunck. Obviously a Tesla will be different but it does raise a question.

If Teslas are basically a part time AWD vehicle, what happens when the rear wheels slip, how does the traction control work on say ice covered roads?

Is power reduced or the front just kicks in? Does it use braking at the wheel without traction? Is there any notification to the driver of a traction issue?
Can traction control be turned off? For example you want to do donuts in the snow?

I have never thought or looked up any of these questions. At the same time I haven't seen any conversations about it. That may be my lack of searching though.

Found answers to most of my questions here.

Off Road mode sounds like something to use in snow? Engages all wheels with reduced torque.
Yes, all of the above things happen pretty much. Braking, differential traction to each wheel. Etc.

It was instructive to me to watch somebody else's model Y (with stock tires) in the ski area parking lot take off from their parking spot. They drove a lot faster than I would have, and all 4 tires were going at different (very fast!) spins. Yet the car seemed to be under great control.

I also noticed that while we were headed down the mountain and still had the Contis, the car behind me kept a larger than normal distance. Probably due to the rooster tails I was throwing with all 4 wheels!

All of this improved with proper snow tires.

  • Off-Road Assist is designed to provide overall improvements when driving off-road. In addition to allowing the wheels to spin, Off-Road Assist balances the torque between the front and rear motors to optimize traction. Off-Road Assist improves traction on rough and soft surfaces where one side of the vehicle may lose traction while the other side still has traction. When Off-Road Assist is on, the accelerator pedal provides more gradual torque, which is useful for crawling at low speeds (for example, over rocky surfaces). When enabled, OFF-ROAD displays on the touchscreen above the driving speed.
I don't think you want or need to use off road mode most or much of the time. We haven't. Traction control does most of what you need while you are driving on even snow covered roads, unless it is very deep.

Wow! Good for you. Better squeeze in these last days of summer driving!

Mobile service just came yesterday and installed my PPF and mudflaps since it didn't come with the Austin build. He even fixed and replaced my rear view mirror housing that was causing an annoying rattle.

What a great service to have available .

Well, I said I was going to hold off, but now I think I will go for some PPF at least on the front. I went to expel and it seemed VERY high. Any advice from anyone in the Idaho community that could lead me to a better option for some partial PPF?

Trying to remain a little budget conscious since you all know how easy it is to go down the 10k Tesla rabbit hole with accessories !!!
