Hey, Idaho Tesla folk! How are you all doing this winter? I never got around to getting real snow tires and am doing fine with my stock Coni's for now. At least around here up in SV. I may start looking for a sale as winter goes on and people want to move tires. May just go with some set of wheels I can find that fit and Costco Blizzaks. Not sure I want to spend up for the Hakkas.

Are you using Offroad Assist at all?

We have had 2.5 months of snowpacked roads now, so we've had a lot of time to test things. Our Contis have 12000 miles on them and probably aren't as good for traction as they were last year, when we really didn't have a lot of snow time on them.

Today was a good test of our Model Y as a snow car. Drove back up from BoisAngeles on 55 this afternoon and had slick snowy roads above Banks (2 spinoffs and 1 slideoff in 25 miles, two big 4WD pickups and a sedan). No probs for us using Nokian Hakkas, and we put the car in "snow mode" which is Offroad Assist plus Chill. We have found that's the most surefooted driving and just go there when the roads are challenging.

We did note that the newish software that predicts the state of charge at journey's end was 8.5% off (on the wrong side of things) when we got home. I assume that part of that was the use of Offroad Assist, but it was off by negative 4% before we turned the assist on halfway up (50 miles of 100). Only 0.8% off on the way down, when the roads were better but not clear. Hard to tell, but it only makes sense that using all 4 wheels to drive and brake comes at a range cost.

No, I still haven't taken the time to find it, as generally, other than high centering it once in my unplowed driveway, I have been fine. But will find that today and try it out in our new snow. Was hoping to ski today, but other engagements may keep me from it. Will tomorrow though to coach the middle aged and upper kids in our weekly ARCS program on Wednesday mornings. Might have to stick to lawyer stuff and some other appointments today.

And have not been traveling any road trip distances yet to check in on range issues. Probably will have a trip or 3 coming up in the new year down to SLC/PC area and Jackson/Targhee. Nothing up toward McCall or Bogus coming up.

Yes, I recommend trying it. I think traction control works very well in snowy conditions 95% of the time. But inevitably, your rear wheel drive will kick you out from a rut or in a turn, and it takes a half second or so for traction control to fix it. That might be too long in some instances. Who wants to be occupying the adjacent lane along with another vehicle?

We have found that Offroad prevents those kickouts from happening in the first place, and it is nice to have regen braking applied to all wheels at once as well. Because rear only brakes can throw you, especially on ice.

Mind you, traction control does all that for you, but it just takes a while to kick in. We have tried switching it on and off as we are driving, and it doesn't take long to feel the sure-footedness of OR.

Hey all...it's been a while since I posted. Took advantage of the crazy Tesla price crash and found a 2022 M3LR with just 51 miles on it and pulled the trigger for my wife. It is BLACK which concerns me for upkeep. Does Boise have a true/complete touch less car wash that is automated? Or just the hand wand variety. I have full frontal PPF and ceramic coating on it, but these forums have scared me from using Epic or Rocket like I have done in the past with my other cars.
Hand washing I know is best...but I'm often busy (lazy) and not sure I can commit to that 24/7 - 365. What are ya'll doing? Any advice?

I'm going a year with my MYP that is ceramic coated, and I wash it probably 3-4x a month at Rocket Wash. It's holding up great, and no major paint swirls. I don't use their towels, I bring my own waffle weave microfibers for drying. Is the paint flawless? Heck no, but it's not a hot mess. The MYP is my daily driver, so I'm not all that concerned about show quality paint. I'm busy, and I like a clean car. The OCD detailing is reserved for my Porsche Boxster that will never see a tunnel wash.

Thanks...I am just mostly concerned with the BLACK!

I hear you on the black. I've owned a few black cars and always said "never again" after each one. I will say that comparing Rocket to Epic, I think the Rocket brushes are far more gentle and they maintain their wash equipment a lot better than Epic. Regarding touchless, there are a few gas station type touchless washes, but I've found that touchless uses a much harsher chemical in an attempt to get the car clean. Several have reported discolored aluminum trim around the doors, etc...

Arghh...that's what I was afraid of. So it looks like an always or never kind of option 🤷‍♂️ Didn't really want Black but got a deal that we couldn't refuse. The used market is absolutely tanking as I am sure you are aware of. It has the white interior as well, which is another topic of discussion:rolleyes: But she loves it.

Well, happy wife, happy life! If she's not totally hung up on an occasional swirl and wants a clean shiny black car, I'd just get an unlimited membership at Rocket ($34.95) and call it a day!

Just an FYI for those travelling up and down our state.

The CCS1/CHAdeMO Chargepoint charger at the Casino in Lewiston is somewhat on the fritz. Plugshare says no info and the folks I know up there say it is down with no fixie scheduled. But a woman in a Tesla stopped there Friday and although the machine said "station not set up" she waved her Chargepoint RFID card at it and was able to charge!

Travelling north-south in Idaho is a challenge, to say the least. We usually go through Lewiston to visit family in Central Washington, but this time, without the Lewiston charger, we took the interstate route through Washington and Oregon. Added 3.5 hours and a hundred miles to the trip. Next time I'll take my chances and if I miss Lewiston, maybe go back to Pullman and then top off in Grangeville at the Super 8 Level II Tesla charger, or the planned CCS1 if it is installed by then.

Anyone know any tricks for travelling the uncovered areas of the state?

Hi all! I have been driving all over here and gone, skiing and such, and now turning seasons. But have not logged in forever, and figured I would check in with you lot.

As said, drove between here and Targhee a couple times, Utah resorts a few times, and over to Boise and back a lot. (new girlfriend). I drove through horrible weather, drifting snow, ice, driving snowstorms, sometimes all at once or sometimes some combination of the three and more. The car has done great, and it was all on the stock 19" rims and tires. I would like to get a more dedicated winter set at some point, but never got to it this year, and did fine as long as I drove sensibly. I grew up driving american RWD huge vehicles so am used to seeking traction, and the Y did very well for me with its weight, as long as I was sensible with power into or releasing power and adding autobrake, through the pedal. I may just find another set of Gemini wheels, or get a set of 20 inchers for summer, and use my 19's for snow. I do have a couple little bits of curb rash which I wish I didn't but, it happens, and happened to me.

I have a couple nicks and scratches to get repaired and then will probably finish some more PPF. I have been happy with the front PPF I did do. Have been using my old Thule hitch rack on my factory installed hitch easily. It does make a difference in range, but I just account for that, and charge accordingly so I can just drive. Used the Mountain Home Walmart EA chargers for the first time yesterday, as the huge headwind had brought my expected ending charge below 10 percent, and I don't play that game. I prefer to end a trip near 20 per cent. Yes, I am risk adverse. I know a lot of other that are more daring than I, but if I don't have to be I won't. My Korean CCS adapter I purchased before they became available here has been a gawd send. I use it in Boise as there is a Chargepoint near my girlfriend's place that is convenient, and as I said, having the Mountain Home option is nice. Looking forward to the Arco charger opening. Haven't looked lately to see when that will be. It would be nice to get a few more options on the Dillon route up to Bozeman. I suppose I will explore the Missoula route this summer also. (talking direct from the Sun Valley area now). It will be great to have some options up in Stanley also at some point. As I have not traveled there recently, I don't know the status there either.

Hope you all are well! Cheers!

Behold, the Idaho Room! A location resplendent with discussions of potatoes, gems, star garnet, Hell's Canyon, and more. Please do bask in the richness that is the Idaho Room.
Hey, Idaho TESLA siblings! MY2023 owner here.
I need your help! Calling all TESLA brothers and sisters! (THIS IS NOT A SOLICITATION!)

I bought an after-market power frunk kit for my MY2023 and I’m having trouble with it. There are NO TESLA accessory install shops that I can find anywhere in the Boise metro area, so I’m stuck! I got it 99% installed, and I tested it out about 6-7x w/o issue (it worked!); then, I reinstalled my HEPA filter and frunk liner and shroud / escutcheon—only to have my power frunk no longer work! It still goes up and down, but there seems to be a problem with my OEM latch, as it only rests on top of the latch because the latch won’t open properly and receive the frunk lid, locking it in place. With that, my TESLA is essentially un-drivable right now. (I can’t drive it with a frunk lid that won’t latch shut.) Also, when it was working (before it stopped working), it opened and closed a lot faster than it now is. (Again, it just won’t latch shut.) I don’t know if there is a way to adjust the speed at which the struts open and close the frunk lid.

This is the item I bought from Tlyard:

It’s similar to the one from Hanshow, but there are some notable differences. (e.g. My Tlyard kit did not include an emergency release cable and the brackets that connect to the bottom of the new struts are a different shape than Hanshow’s brackets.) The directions from Tlyard are garbage and I could not find any videos on YouTube that show step-by-step installation instructions specifically for their product (their brand). However, I did find a few step-by-step installation instructional videos for the Hanshow version / product; that helped but was not ideal. When I messaged in to Tlyard on their website, they sent me a link to a YouTube video of someone installing the Hanshow version! LOL Basically, Tlyard has been useless to me, in terms of support.

If anyone is in the Boise area and has any experience installing one of these power frunk kits or knows someone who can help me troubleshoot my install, I could really use the help! The only shops I’ve been able to locate that even do this kind of work (specifically for TESLA’s) are in SLC! Mine is basically installed, but it’s not working properly (after it already did before I reinstalled the plastic pieces under the hood).
