So my ‘full spec’ Performance Model 3 is here, and it is now time to let go of my well cared for 2013 S85. Before you keep reading, if you need autopilot, folding mirrors, park distance control, a panoramic roof, motorized charge port door, or SiriusXM, you can stop here and look elsewhere. But if you want a perfect, gently used S85, this is for you.

Here is the Monroney:

Monroney.jpg

I ordered the car at the old Menlo Park location in February 2013, but had to wait until May to take delivery, since Elon hadn’t yet found ‘a red that did not suck’ (yes, direct quote). Note that this has the full leather interior (seats, dashboard, steering wheel, door panels), and the tech package with the power rear liftgate. Also, there was a production window where there was a swap from the original pathetic fog lights to the newer system, and since my car fell into the ‘gap’, the ‘next gen’ fog lights were retrofit after delivery. The car has a solid multi-coat red roof (no panoramic sunroof). This is a 1 owner, 1 driver car. No long road trips (it’s never been on more than a 3 hour drive from home).

Body & Paint: Perfect (yes, really). Here are some photos:

Exterior1.jpg Exterior2.jpgExterior3.jpg Exterior5.jpg Exterior6.jpg Exterior7.jpg

No collisions, no body work, no door dings, no rubs, no respray, no compounding, no polishing, no clay bar, no waxing. Shortly after taking delivery, I brought the car to Joe at OCDetailing (OCDetailing - Bay Area Coating & Clear Bra Specialist), when he was a 1-man shop near me. He did a multi-day, wheels off, full correction and Opti-Coat Pro ceramic polymer SiC application (including the wheels). The car is kept garaged at night, and gets hand washed twice a week. In 2015 I brought the car back to Joe for a ‘tune up’ and re-coat. In June of this year, I bought it back to him again in Fremont for a full 2-day wheels off complete correction and re-coat with Opti-Coat Pro+, Opti-Glass Pro on all exterior glass, and Opti-Guard Leather throughout the interior. You are good to go for 3+ years with basically no special care. This is a $2000+ value. The car has never been out of the SF Bay Area, so no snow, hail, road salt, etc. BTW, I never installed the front license plate, but the plate is mounted to the bracket, which I keep in the frunk.

Interior: Perfect (yes, really). Here are a couple of photos:

Interior1.jpg Interior2.jpg

This is a 1 owner, 1 driver, no smoking car. No kids (so no juice boxes or old French fries under the seats, no muddy football cleats). I don’t drink coffee, so no spilled Starbucks lattes in between the seats. This is not my dining room either. The right front seat has a passenger maybe once a month. The rear seats have been occupied maybe 4 times a year. Full leather interior, with the kangaroo pocket on the front of the drivers seat cushion (convenient). The leather is soft and supple—no cracks or fading. The center console is the original carpeted tray (no full console or ‘yacht floor’). The tiny useless sun visors (original to early 2012-2013 builds) were replaced in January 2015 with the current size ones (still without the illuminated vanity mirrors, but the 12V power is actually up in the headliner). The original thin flimsy carpeted floor mats were replaced twice (last in June 2017)—now the better quality standard ones. The wood trim is the original Obeche Gloss with vertical grain. Note that this build has the original extra large front trunk with the ‘microwave space’, so it has the largest frunk storage of any Model S (yes, you can even fit a spare wheel/tire up there if you so desire). Here is a photo:

Frunk.jpg

Wheels & Tires: The car has the original 10-spoke 19” wheels (the roads around here have way too many potholes for larger rims and low profile tires). There is a bit of rim rash, which I have not bothered to repair. You might want to repaint or powder coat them, or even get new aftermarket wheels. The tires are the OEM Goodyear RS-A2 tires, which for me have been a good price-performance point. The last set was installed at America’s Tire in August 2017 at 49k miles. I get about 24k miles on a set, so you should be good for a while. Note that the car has Smart Air Suspension, and I do lower it at 60 MPH, but tire wear has been perfectly even. I do check tire pressures compulsively, rotate the tires every 6k miles, and get the alignment checked and adjusted at every 12k annual service, and it is spot on. BTW, since this early build has the old ‘dumb’ TPMS (no display of pressures), I installed a FoboPLUS TPMS system, which uses Bluetooth valve caps with pressure transducers, and works with your smartphone, continuously monitoring low and high pressures and tire temperatures, with push notifications.

Battery & Charging: The car has the original B pack. Range charged maybe 4 times. Routinely never charge past 90%. Still get about 224-225 miles at 90% (basically no degradation). The car has dual chargers, so if you have a properly wired HPWC, you can pull 80A at 240V, or about 60 miles/hour of charge. The car has the original 1st generation UMC, so you get the full 40A charge at 240V, or about 30 miles/hour of charge on a properly wired NEMA 14-50R. Infrequent supercharging (no regular long road trips). And yes, you get free unlimited supercharging (transferrable).

Mechanicals: Solid, no issues. I purchased the 4-year service plan, and have done every prepaid annual service, plus I just did a full paid 5-year service in June at 56k miles (including a drive unit flush and fill). I have all service records and receipts. I also purchased the extended 4 year service plan (really an extended warranty), which is transferrable and good for another 3 years, so you are covered for any major mechanical issues. All recalls and service bulletins have been performed, including the underbody shield and deflector plate, the Takata air bag and the power steering bolts, as well as some other minor TSBs. The 12V battery was replaced in 2014 at 12k miles, and has been good since. There were quite a few ‘teething pains’, but everything has been wrung out under warranty. I have never been stranded—the car has never ‘broken down’. Some highlights:

Replaced instrument cluster (service bulletin for improper solder flux)
Replaced all 3 coolant pumps (alert popped up)
Replaced driver’s door window regulator (making noise)
Replaced glove box (door not latching properly)
Replaced drive unit January 2015 @ 25k miles (milling noise)
Replaced TPMS control unit & antenna (occasional faults)
Replaced GPS antenna and cable (occasional failure to get GPS lock)
Replaced drivers and right rear door handles
Replaced B-pillar leather trim (excessive wear)
Replaced front fender side turn signal lamp assemblies (trim delaminating)
Replaced all lug nuts and chrome lug nut covers (excessive wear)
Replaced rear liftgate latch assembly and cinch actuator (seized)

Firmware: I’m on the latest release for my build (updated 9/20/18). Believe it or not, the car has had over 50 firmware updates since delivery (…keeps getting better).

Upgrades/Extras: I have added a lot of extras and upgrades. These include:

•LTE modem upgrade for the MCU (the car came with the original 3G modem)-$500.
•Lighted chrome rear liftgate applique
(see Lighted Appliques for Tesla Model S - Tesla Lights) -$975 plus installation (non-trivial/$$$)
•Upgraded interior LED lights
(see https://www.abstractocean.com/Tesla_interior_light_kit/)
(full interior/frunk/trunk plus red door lights)-AbstractOcean-$175.
•Upgraded rear license plate LED lights (car originally had incandescent lamps)—AbstractOcean-$21.
(see LED License Plate Bulb Kit).
•Tesla T front door puddle light upgrade-AbstractOcean-$50.
(see Ultra-Bright LED Puddle Lights (pair)).
•Front console cubby drawer
(see Vendor - New Cubby Drawer)
(with red velour interior to match multi-coat red)-Norm @ TMC-$85.
•Blackvue DR550GW-2CH dual front-rear HD dash cam (full custom install)—yes, older model, works fine.
If you want to replace it, the power and rear camera cable are plug and play with the 750 and 900 models,
so easy to upgrade. $400 plus installation (non-trivial/$$$).
•Upgraded rear liftgate camera (B-revision in 2016)—improves low light visibility and resolution.
(see Tesla says it can't be done: But it can: new higher resolution rear camera). $78 plus installation (non-trivial/$$).
•Red Tesla front door sill stickers (Roger @ TMC).
•Black Tesla T center cap wheel stickers (Roger @ TMC)-$12.
•Magnetic slim-line phone mount (AbstractOcean)-$22.
(see Magnetic Phone Holder (Slimline)).
•Front trunk parcel net (for the ‘microwave area’)-$20.
•FoboPLUS TPMS system (see FOBO Tire Plus (For Heavy Duty Pickups) - FOBO) -$180.
•Opti-Coat Pro+/Opti-Glass Pro/Opti-Guard Leather (see above)-$2000+.
•CA HOV stickers—you get the white stickers, which expire 12/31/2018.
•Silicone key fob covers (Fob Pockets from AbstractOcean) on both fobs.
(see Silicone FobPockets (Model S) - The Black Collection).

Still interested? I’m asking $44,000. FWIW, KBB says $42,000 for a private sale (and cannot calculate the added value of all of the upgrades & extras). Vroom says $38,000 (essentially a trade-in offer). And I have clear title—pink slip in hand. I’m in the SF Bay Area. Please send me a private message/conversation through TMC with your contact information. I would very much like to sell it to one of my colleagues here on TMC.

You are a gifted writer! Most comprehensive AND entertaining listing I've read to date. I find myself trying to think up rationalizations to buy your S!!! GLWS.

...are you up for a cross-country trip back? Maybe you need an S for a very, very deserving child (??yourself??)??
Oh the drive is a breeze! Did it twice last summer; my son interned with Tesla in San Mateo/Fremont so I 'helped him with the drive' and scored a factory tour in the process. He was considering buying a used S, but the math just doesn't make sense for a new college grad compared to his current paid-for hybrid. I drove a loaner S100D a few weeks ago while some warranty stuff was being handled on my 3; gotta say the luxury soundproofing and suspension of the S is something I miss in my 3. But I honestly think the S is simply too big for my needs these days. My perfect world would be a 3 with better sound insulation and an air suspension...hoping the Y will have those elements when it is released. Meanwhile, I 'slum it' with my 3 by just turning the sound system louder and taking 5psi out of the tires. All that said, MAN your S is super tempting. Someone is going to jump on a fantastic opportunity here. Wow.

Lots of views...lots of compliments...but no interest??

The condition and disclosures about your car are as good as it gets for someone looking to buy a used Tesla and if it has not sold it just means the market would like to pay less considering the desirability of the Model S.

Maybe update your listing to start taking "best offers" so you see where the market is at. Have you listed your car on cars.com and Listings | Only Used Tesla

You are probably right. I will go ahead and list on OnlyUsedTesla.

Price adjustment to $42,000 or best offer.

If I needed a car, or could have thought of a way to rationalize buying your car, it'd have happened this past week.
FWIW, my fear for you is that values are going to fall more rapidly as v9 tech is released, and as more and more Model S vehicles hit the used market as owners trade into their 3s. New Model S will probably also see declining sales prices as Tesla tries to keep volume up while the market is increasingly confident that a material refresh of at least the interior is imminent.

It may make more sense to hold onto your S at this point, and view it as a collector vintage given that it is in such stellar condition.

(But if one of my cars gets totaled tomorrow, I'll be back in touch with you to convince you to sell!)
