Something I've Observed...

By the time I placed my order for my MYLR in July of 2021, I as all of you, really looked at Tesla build quality. It was hit or miss at that time with lots of comments, leaning to the negative side.

Aside from the slight bump every MY has at the rear door, mine was flawless. The service tech proudly told me that Tesla put in a strong effort to correct issues in May of that year. I did not check with a panel gap device, but Mrs. Hurricane went over every inch, a far more advanced defect checker.

That said, build quality issues appears to have returned to Fremont. I've seen some ugly defects lately. I don't know what the issue is there, but it's in the news way too much.

I recently had a model y delivered out of Fremont. Front headlight misaligned, Rear door very misaligned, top glass misaligned, interior dash trim misaligned, front marker lights loose, Front windshield trim bunched up and coming off. I was told these issues could not be fixed and these are not to speak of the numerous minor issues. All of these were easy to notice just from sight and with my untrained eye. I was told they were "in spec" but no one could tell me what spec was. Literally my 93 ford escort base model had superior build quality. It was an easy REJECT. Absolutely a big NO at this price point. Waiting to review their last and second chance vehicle.

Unfortunately ‘spec’ often seems to be what the specific service center is willing to fix. 😕

Why did you accept it?
I wasn’t sure if all black tesla cars were like that. I didn’t go in with high expectations on paint quality anyway. It looks ok at distance.

When I was installing mud flaps I found the passenger side rear bumper under cover had a missing screw. It was probably never put on. I’m pretty sure I’ll find more QC issues like those.

Almost every car has some amount of orange peel. I’ve had Acura’s and Audi’s with orange peel. The only way to get rid of it is to wet sand and polish the entire car. It’s just the clear coat so, it can be done.

I had a model Y delivered less than 3 weeks ago. They dropped the car in my driveway without notifying me. However the big problem was quality, which is not in par with any of my previous Japanese cars. The back seat was stained. The rear door seemed like after a collision. Dealership totally ignored request to send somebody to inspect the car. National service set up an appointment for the next morning, where Tech and Master Tech checked it and said that although the problem is not the metal but lousy work of sealing that had hardened, they need to send it to a body shop for 3-4 weeks. Great thing for new car on day 1.
Tesla is a great car design company, and driving their cars is really fun. But if they don't learn the skills of quality manufacturing and inspection, and truly internalize that a customer that pays such a high price is entitled to get a perfect product, they will end up going the same way as the Detroit Big Three.

I knew going in that Tesla build quality was iffy, especially with end-of-quarter pushes. Picked up our MYLR on 4/29/22 and things were better than I expected. Some panel alignment issues on passenger side but acceptable. I bought the Tesla based on performance and technology and it has not disappointed in those areas. I decided early on to not let minor things spoil my enjoyment of the car.
