I find great utility in using Search for the site, but I worry that new users or even long term users haven't found it or don't know how good it can be to find information on the site.

My suggestion: Increase the visibility of the search box by actually increasing the size of the search box. Possibly extending the length of the box or populating it with various sample search strings that are known to return good results.

Here is what it currently looks like and I think it's a bit too small to be easily noticed. What do others think?

While we're on the subject of the search UI, I always use the Advanced Search rather than Google's. I doubt that will influence the site design, but sharing the data point nonetheless.

I have yet to find anything with Google's custom search. I always go to advanced as well.

While I prefer Advanced i use Google first because of convenience (no clicking) The size and placement is fine to me. It's the only fill-in box in the header, has the words Google (logo in color) Custom search and a magnifier icon next to it. Seems pretty clear to me.

BTW, Google can find 3 letter words while Advanced cannot.
