Hi folks. Below is a copy and paste of something I posted on the smart ed website. I know we are not Telsa owners (yet) but we contribute where we can. Below is our report of the Duosida 16 amp 120/240 in use with our smart ED and Leaf. Hope someone finds it useful.
Hi folks. Angela and I purchased a Duosida 16 amp 120/240 volt EVSE for use with our 2015 smart ED as well as our 2016 Nissan Leaf SV. We bought it from Brad at BSA electronics in vegas. Great guy to deal with and builds his own line of open EVSE's as well. Highly recommended.
We have a Juicebox 40 WIFI that we are very happy with but it is too big to be used as a portable unit. We wanted something that would charge the smart at 3.3KW and be small and portable enough to throw in the back of the smart. Although primarily for use with our smart it will be good for the leaf as well although it charges Max at 3.8KW and the leaf can take 6.6. We take the smart south with us behind the motorhome in the winter so its home will be primarily the smart.
One thing about the juicebox is that when on 120 volts it only sends a 12 amp pilot to the car so the smart will never draw more than 12 amps on 120. That way it can be used on 15 amp circuits with no worries of popping the breaker. However the Duosida sends a 16 amp pilot to the car so the car will draw a full 16 amps on 120 or 240 volts. That is handy when you frequent RV parks like us. We can use either the TT30 120 volt receptacle or the 50 amp 240 volt receptacle in in an RV spot. Nice. We carry the original EVSE if we need to plug into 15 amp 120 volt spot.
