Screen is supposed to be Infrared instead of Touch-Capacitive and therefore it should work with gloves. Tesla picked IR for the exact reason you outline.

Turn the heat up with your iphone before you get in the car

I read here somewhere that the screen is currently infrared but they're working on capacitive.

When I asked during the ride I was just told they tried to do that but it didn't work out so well in tests. No indication of if they're still trying or not though.

I was more or less told that they gave up on it.

What type of feedback were they giving? Vibration as in phones, or a small electric shock? It is an EV!!

Funny enough it was kind of a surprise for early Roadster buyers way back when. They almost never mentioned it in specs or press.

For a 17" display you definitely want something better than IR. IR isn't as accurate or responsive, and can't handle multi-touch properly (zoom in on maps), and is likely to mis-read in bright daylight. But IR is better than pressure. No, there aren't dual systems yet AFAIK. Note that all the top-end portable GPS units are now capacitive.

Very cool. But it looks like the new panels are only available up to 8" - a far cry from the 17" needed.

I was told that the screens are still in diagnostic mode. That might Have something to do with it.
