Initial impressions Model 3 Performance bs 85D model S

It wouldn’t be the first time that Tesla releases the car before the software is ready. When P85D was released, people were unhappy about its range. IIRC, that was because the software to fully benefit from dual motors wasn’t ready, when first cars were delivered to customers. Tesla “forgot” to tell it.

Of course Tesla later delivered the “torque sleep” software OTA, but IIRC, there was several weeks radio silence preceding that.

Took delay very of my Model 3 Performance today.
... As they are currently delivered, there is not even bashing on the rear and nothing on the screen that I can see when I hit the T icon on the screen that would tell me its a performance. Just a paranoid thought, don’t assault me for it please.

The custom bashing requires Tesla-licensed specialists using bespoke vehicles with reinforced front bumpers. It goes without saying that bashing by a Rolls-Royce is more expensive than the default of run-of-the-mill Civics, but be prepared to sell organs if the deed absolutely, positively must be accomplished by a Duesenberg SJ.

Edit: shorts love the fact there's a line for Tesla-bashing that the company seemingly just can't work through.

450 hp on performance (repeated by a couple other magazines), 346 hp on regular AWD: Tesla Model 3 Performance first drive: The best Tesla yet?

Yes but nobody knows where they got those #s from, since Tesla hasn't published any, and they don't match the EPA published numbers.

It's possible they're correct and the EPA #s are being misunderstood....but it's also possible one car review guy got them wrong and everyone just copied that first source (it's also possible Tesla is secretly telling car mags the #s and nobody else I suppose but that'd be kind of weird since they know they're publishing the info)

I think another discussion suggests that the P85D has more punch but shorter, while the P3D has less punch but can hold it for longer.

I don't know about the difference, but that issue is exactly why mere peak power from power tools isn't very informative. More informative is, of course the times, but also if you are going to measure something, look at the overall power (or torque, or gs etc.) curve over the course an entire acceleration run.

Good for this purpose is teslalog, for instance showing this for a P85DL:

Or this for a P90DL:

A better comparison is a BMW 340i xdrive vs. an M3 - about a $15K delta, but you get a 100 hp for that delta. The flipside there is the 0-60 performance delta is less than even the AWD 3 to AWD P3.
We are talking a completely different engine and chassis. The M5 vs M5 competition is a tune just like a AWD to P3D.

Max motor power ratings - actual hp measured at the wheels will be less... Tesla Model 3 - Wikipedia

Maximum Motor Power kW/hp
  • LR - RWD 211 kW (283 hp) rear
  • LR - AWD 188 kW (252 hp) rear & 147 kW (197 hp) front, 449 hp total
  • LR - AWD P 211 kW (283 hp) rear & 147 kW (197 hp) front, 480 hp total

And yet every dyno I've seen of the RWD is higher than 283 at the wheels.

So either those EPA numbers don't mean what people think they mean, or nobody knows how to dyno an electric car.

So you confirm the red underline comes without the performance package. That makes sense.

Do you have a physical badge on the car yet? If so would you mind taking a picture. I also ordered the same color and config.

it should. it is just a designation of the car configuration itself, noting that it is a dual motor performance variant.

i don't have the physical badge itself. the dealer said i'd have to get it from a service center at a later time. i already posted an inquiry on my tesla account, so hopefully will hear back from them this week.
