Installing a Passport 9500ci radar detector / laser diffuser

I was asking about the GPS reciever, not the radar receiver. Some installs call for it to be mounted on the exterior roof of the car. I will not do that, so I'm looking for an ergonomic, and functional place for mounting. The manual calls for it to be mounted on the interior windshield but that may be problematic due to the metal in the windshield.

Hey guys – I used to be a valentine one fan but apparently this thing won't work in the tesla given the coating on the front windshield. I'm looking to install the passport (linked below) and it appears that most of the components can go right behind the front nose cone.

Any suggestions or recommendations for or against doing this? I have a couple days before my appointment so I can always cancel if there are major concerns.

Thanks!

Hey guys. In Italy radar detectors are not legal and the police can also take your car if they find such a device on it. I would like to know if in the USA you are allowed to mount radar detectors on your cars without any fear of the police.

Radar detectors are legal in most states, except Virginia and District of Columbia. Laser shifters/jammers like in the Passport 9500 are illegal in 10 states. http://www.guysoflidar.com/usa-laser-jammer-laws.html

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I should have known better as I have the same install question for my car.

I agree that roof mount is a no-no for the Model S. Some owners of other cars mount it under the plastic cowl between end of the front hood and the base of the windshield but as best as I can determine Model S does not have such a space (as I don't have the car yet it's hard to tell). GPS will receive through plastic so if such a space exists on the Model S that placement would be ideal. Another possible placement would be behind the plastic nose cone.

Guys- I just had mine professionally installed. Will take pics and send when I can. GPS antenna and powered speaker both fit just fine under the grill where the windshield and dashboard meet. The installation looks VERY clean, as I too was worried about a GPS puck on my dash.

The other option was to install in the nosecone but the aforementioned placement worked just fine. Controller module with buttons was mounted in glove box and there are really no visible signs of the install.

Pictures to be forthcoming...

So relieved to hear this news. Very much looking forward to the photos.

ok... here are the photos: (sorry but my garage reflected alot of light from the windshield so some dash grill pics are a little "reflective")

This is the dash "grill" where the speaker and GPS receiver went. I cant even see it but I took a picture of where he installed it.

If you live in one of the 10 states where laser shifters are illegal, you will need to mount the small controller someplace more accessible than the glovebox. The recommended procedure in those states when you get hit with the laser blast is to brake and double tap the mute button. That defeats the laser shifters. So the cop will take a reading, get nothing, take a second reading and find you within the speed limit.

Can you point out on your image where the shifters are? I don't see them!

How did he get access to the grill area?

As I understand how laser jammers work, if the sensor can't be seen it will be far less effective in jamming. The sensors do not work nearly as well when hidden behind grilles or other obstructions. After all, it's detecting laser light. The Blinder site makes that quite clear. But maybe the installer knows some secrets:wink:

The radar detector is a different story. It can be behind the nose cone, completely hidden.

I have no idea how he got access... I know he disassembled the "frunk" lining so it was probably easy access once that was done.

Here is a pic with circles where the diffusers are and a square where the radar receiver is mounted.

Its hard to see. I can get close- ups for you if needed,.

Here's an update for everyone.

First, my friend who works for an auto warranty company recommended Car Toys in Totem Lake (Kirkland area.) He told me they are one of the best install places for stereos and electronics for cars in the Seattle area. Their is a guy names Chris there that is awesome... He has installed these systems for years. Wasn't familiar with Tesla but figured it out and did an incredible job.

Second, I too looked at blinder but didn't want a second system and the reviews I saw on the ZR4 (diffusers that come with the 9500ci) were good. The forums I read said the ZR4 were great, while "sponsored" sites were saying they were crap. I originally planned on installing both systems but the install guys at Car Toys told me the ZR4s work just fine and that he knew people with Blinders that were seeing the same results as he personally had with the ZR4s (They guy Chris had the 9500ci installed on his own Audi, which he showed me before I had anything done. Him having the unit himself was a pretty good sign...) . Since I have had them (about 3 weeks now) I have been lasered about 5 times, two of which I know for a fact I was speeding and luckily had time to slow down while the unit shifts from "diffuser" to "detector" mode (the unit does this automatically after 7 seconds so as to not completely piss off cops.) Two times were state troopers, the other three times were kirkland and bellevue police. As far aI can tell, these things are doing the job and I dont see a need to supplement with the Blinder system

Lastly, as far as placement goes, the guy who did my install has professionally done these things for over 5 years. He informed me that the size of the grill in front of the diffusers wasn't substantial and that the most important part of the install was the leveling. I hear the unit tell me its "shifting lasers" when i get hit by the police with laser and as mentioned above, have not been stopped or ticketed.

Call Car Toys, ask for Aaron and tell him you want Chris to do the install (Aaron works at the front desk.) I don't really care about a referral fee, nor do i think they would give me one if I asked! I was somewhat skeptical but these guys do a great job. Expect it to take about a full day (they wrap all the wires with the corrugated black protectors and finish everything off really nice. My final price for the unit and install was 2,340.00 out the door (about $1,300 for the unit, I talked them down from $1,600, and 800 for the install plus tax.) I know, alot of money but for the setup and protection I am getting, well worth it!

Email with any questions and good luck!
