When choosing how much auto insurance to buy, you should look at the amount of all your assets, not just the value of your car. So if in a worst case scenario you were found at fault in an injury accident and they sued, you wouldn’t lose your house or savings or whatever once your insurance limits are exhausted.
For example, my coworker was hit by a fellow who hydroplaned into him head on and was found at fault. My coworker almost died and spent months in a hospital and was out of work for a year and had to have multiple surgeries and walks with a cane now. The guy who hit him only had like $25k in liability so he is now being sued directly for all the medical and lost wages. The lawyer is going after any and all assets the guy has.
