Insurance for M3LR v M3P

To cut a long story short my insurance is up near the end of June, and I’m also considering trading in my M3LR for an M3P.

Last year I paid a little over £500 (part of a multi car policy with Admiral), but checking this year all prices on the comparison sites are over £600 (including my renewal). Except that is, for Directline, who quoted just over £400 and who I’ve gone with. Now comes the interesting bit…..

Out of interest, I thought I’d do the same search on the comparison sites (so not including DL) but using a M3P as the car - 4 quotes came in under £400 and when comparing quotes from same companies they are virtually all 20%-30% cheaper for the P over the LR - I just don’t get it.

So, does anybody know why and can explain the reason behind it?
