Insuring a Tesla in UK

After some ideas from the UK owners on insuring a Telsa, what sort of numbers people had to pay, some insurers offering better deals than others or....?

Am aged nearly 51, do 18,000 miles a year or just under, no convictions for at least 5 years and a no claims bonus well over 10 years.

Not a company car user, park on my driveway and my biggest drive is the 45 min drive each way, to commute to work.

95% of my driving is local or to / from work, with the occasional trip from Glasgow to near Blackpool - to visit family - which is about 190 miles each way.

Am trying to work out final costs and order a piggin X :)

Good morning,

I have just renewed my car insurance and had a variety of quotes.

I have also insured my wife, we both have many years of no claims, I have one SP30. My Model S 90D was new in March. [Second car is an i3].

Present insurer Admiral raised renewal premium to £1500. NFU have been recommended on this forum and others, their quote £1100, I tried a previous insurer Aviva, their offer over £5000.

Direct Line got my premium at £400 [yes, four hundred for the year, including an excess no different to the others, and a similar sized hire car in the event of issues - I have not been cautious about where repairs will be as I am not planning on having repairs.].

Regards,

Tony

I really hope that the InsureMyTesla program that currently in Australia and Hong Kong comes to every market. Would much rather have my car insured by a company who knows the full potential of the car and it's accident reducing tech. Plus I trust Elon Musk more than I do my current insurance company.

I imagine that the regular insurance companies are going to decide to charge more for cars fitted with self driving tech because they are scared of change and losing business.

Just ordered an X and actually never even thought about the potential issue with insuring it!! This could be an important thread , let's hope we get plenty of UK owners on here . Knowledge is power ! I guess we will have to be patient until the first deliveries start rolling out in December as those early MX owners will be the Guinea pigs!!

It clearly is a world wide insurance issue if Tesla are teaming up with insurers across the globe to offer policies?

Thanks for the info Tony , very interesting . I'm actually slightly anxious what the MX will cost but it sure isn't going to change the decision to buy one, if it means a diet of bread and jam so be it.............!!

The P90DL comes in a couple of weeks, so I'm very focussed on this now! Having read some posts on UK insurance in the past I was expecting some high but tolerable numbers when looking for a quote, but my early attempts, NFU and Home & Legacy, were way high and a multiple of what I expected to get offered. I live in London and 50, with donkeys' years of no claims, one SP30 nearly expired. Hope springs eternal, though, and will certainly look at Privilege, Direct Line and Churchill urgently now (Admiral multicar too I suppose) but with the performance upgrades I do still expect the worst. Thanks for the tips.

The four insurers above seem quite hit and miss on this particular ask (with separate teams due to the car's value), and apparently Tesla's recent UK sales blip is getting some of them approached big time. So I just got a few more quotes (all by phone since the online systems won't handle the higher value):

Privilege demanded a tracker and because of the value it was put through to a Direct Line specialist, so DL themselves are out. The performance aspect of the car apparently means that the underwriters are looking for previous supercar experience, so they wouldn't quote.

Churchill also asked the "Porsche" question, definitely wanted an independent tracker and eventually put me through to their "Select" team, which turned out to be Direct Line again, so I explained the previous conversation again and again they won't quote. A P90D without the "L" would be quoted for.

Admiral is way best so far (large excess, though) and actually close to where I originally thought it would get to - about £750.

So most of the insurers seem to be worried that they will be covering a suicidal maniac. Ironic given that I have literally never had an accident of any kind in 30 years....! But they are certainly right that the power available in the car itself is something special.

Car is permanently tracked, no? If that satisfies their requirement I'd worry that they didn't know that already!

I'd expect that order of magnitude, particularly in London. Actually I'm quite surprised that some of the quotes mentioned here are a fair bit below that.

I certainly thought the car is not only tracked but a whole range of data kept by Tesla on acceleration, speed, SOC etc. The Direct Line insurers (all the above except Admiral) don't seem to know, at least at the first level, when you first call, and I doubt they care.

Never managed to get insurance for anything near some of those rates quoted, and I wouldn't expect to for something new. Roll on Tesla's own insurance programme, as I gather they are in Oz.

Literally been on this all day today. I pick up my P90D on Friday (30th).

Best deal I have found so far is Admiral. Actually went with Admiral Multicar putting the wife's Golf 2.0 TDI not only brought my cost down but hers too. It's come out at £625pa. I'm in TW2 post code, 48, no convictions and 15 years No Claims. Even with all of that I had some crazy quotes going up £3788pa.

Only thing is the excess is £500 for my car.

Off Topic but does your car have rear cup holders and/or USB ports in the rear?

Just a thought, but maybe UK insurers are quoting high because they don't have as much data or experience with Tesla claims up to now?

Once the 3 comes along I'd like to think they will know a bit more about the risk and won't slap a stupid premium on them just because they are a bit quick to 60mph ;)
