Folks -

When you custom order a Model S P100D, an "optional carbon fiber spoiler" is listed under Standard Equipment. If folks choose to add one in the configurator, it doesn't change the price of the car.

However, many current inventory 2018 P100D's don't include a carbon fiber spoiler. My question: if someone orders an inventory P100D, do they have the option of adding the carbon fiber spoiler without charge, since it's built in to the original price of the car? Or are they forced to pay the additional $1500 to buy it from Tesla's store? If that were the case, wouldn't that mean folks are penalized for buying an inventory P100D?

I called Tesla's sales phone number to ask, the but sales representative I spoke to seemed confused by the question. I asked an owner advisor, and he seemed to imply that Tesla charges extra to add a spoiler to an inventory P100D.

Screenshots of the configurator and and example inventory P100D (without spoiler) attached. Does anyone have experience with this or have thoughts?

...$1500...

I don't have the answer but I assume if I didn't check the spoiler box while configuring my new car and then I realized my mistake during delivery, most likely that mistake would cost me $1,500 to correct it.

The missing spoiler might be a reason why this car is an inventory car that was rejected by an original configurator also.

I don't know if that's the case - there are hundred's of 2018 inventory cars, most of which are listed without the spoiler.

I called Tesla Sales back and spoke to someone else who assured me that a spoiler could be added to an inventory P100D without charge since it's standard equipment. He promised to follow-up via email, but hasn't.

It's confusing - so far I'm getting inconsistent information from Tesla on this.

...most of which are listed without the spoiler...

If Tesla produced about 20,000 Model S so far in 2018 and the rejection rate is 0.5%, that would be about 100 orphaned cars.

Some owners might walk away if Tesla is inflexible in providing free spoiler post delivery.

On the other hand, my guess is if Tesla intentionally produces inventory cars, then it is cheaper to skip a spoiler and hopes that some prospective owners may not know that the option is free in the configuration.

It's possible that depending on who you can talk to, some are willing while others are not willing to negotiate on this free option (for free or for $1,500).

There's been an inconsistent practice in charging or not charging owners extra for configuration changes both prior and after deliveries (such as in Autopilot/Fully Self Driving...)

I just went through this and they refused to add it to the car. "Inventory cars come as is". The only exception seems to be add/subtract FSD/EAP and if it has 21" wheels and you are going to take delivery in Northeastern part of the country they seem willing to swap to 19's.

Just went through this exact situation!

I ordered an inventory P100D that came with 21" wheels, no FSD, and no Spoiler. I spoke with my delivery specialist and order specialist and they made note of my 3 requests (Swap 21" wheels for 19", add FSD, and add a Spoiler). The FSD and 21" wheels were completed prior to delivery, however they told me the spoiler would have to be done after delivery, but a note would be placed on my account. I'll follow up again when the resolution pans out one way or another, but they never voiced concern or that it would be a problem.

Same for me. I pick up my inventory P100dL tomorrow morning. My car does not have a carbon spoiler of the build sheet. However, the delivery specialist told me all P100d cars come with the carbon spoiler. If they have one in stock at tihe time of delivery they will install it or let me tske it home. If not, they will order one a no cost to me.

Please post pictures of you car!!

Same as I was told!

If the picture request is for me, I will! It's currently being tinted and wrapped with XPEL Stealth (it's midnight silver metallic). I have a couple from the actual pickup day that I can locate and add though. I was too excited to remember to take a lot of photos... (I'm not a photo-oriented guy...)

Congratulations on picking up your inventory P100D! How did the delivery go today? Did they provide you with the carbon fiber spoiler as promised?

Very interested to hear about this - they were insistent that I couldn't get this for free on an inventory P100D. I'll have to ask my delivery specialist once he/she gets assigned. THis was the sales group telling me this. That being said - they were excellent otherwise. Top notch service just like last time!

FWIW - I bought a brand new unused Tesla OEM spoiler (with official lables and everything) on Ebay for $600 (+50 shipping), Service center installed it for me for free.

I'm sure its something simple that can be done on your own, I was just getting other work done at the Service center that day so just took the spoiler along with me!

Anyone successful in getting a spoiler?

FYI I was ultimately able to obtain the carbon fiber spoiler from Tesla for the inventory MS P100D without additional charge. A mobile service technician installed it this morning. I received different responses from the various Tesla Motors folks who helped me obtain the car. Here is a summary:
  • Owner Advisor: was very clear that the spoiler could not be added free of charge. He said he asked for an exception, but I never heard back.

  • Service center (prior to taking delivery): said the spoiler could only be added free of charge if I received a due bill at the time of vehicle delivery.

  • Inside Delivery Advisor (who scheduled delivery): wrote that he was not sure that the spoiler could be installed by delivery, but he saw that I had an open case to add the spoiler. He indicated that worst case scenario it be installed after delivery. (I'm not sure whether the case he referenced was opened by the Owner Advisor or by the service center, but it was good news to me).

  • Delivery Specialist present at delivery: said that all MS P100D's come with spoilers, and agreed to provide me with a written due bill for it to be installed. She said normally due bills are created online.
So that was my somewhat quest to obtain the MS P100D spoiler. Looking over the thread, I'm wondering whether Owner Advisors are instructed that it can't be done, whereas Delivery Advisors/Specialists have the opposite information - or have the discretion to do so.

In any case, I hope this summary helps. I'm grateful to the Tesla Motors folks who put up with my (repeated) requests and came through at the end.
