Inventory X. What is acceptable wear and tear?

Picking up my X this month. It’s an inventory car with 2,700 miles. Based on actual experiences, what have people just accepted vs had fixed at delivery?

My assumption is that I would not accept any rash on the rims, door dings, paint chips on hood from road rash, etc. is that reasonable? Other things I should be thinking about at delivery?

I know there is a 5 page google doc designed for new deliveries, but it seems like most of that document should apply to inventory cars too? After all we are still talking about a car that hasn’t been titled and over $100k. Just want to set my expectations.

Thanks for any advice.

You can expect some minor damage but it really depends on the SC. I saw a black X inventory being delivered in Portland and it did have hood rock chips that were not fixed. I think that they kind of go off the lease return model that if it's larger than a quarter than they fix it. I would recommend that you not pay for your car until you inspect it. Tesla will ask you to do all the paperwork first, do the inspection first and don't pay for it if you find damage.

I leased a model S new inventory demo/loaner that had 6700 miles on it. Before me seeing it they repaired a scratched bumper that fell outside their tolerances.

After I took delivery (I was leasing for 2 years so didn't care that much / look that closely at delivery - and the discount off of sticker was >$30k) I noticed it had some hood chips and actually a roof chip that looked like someone had tried to repair (badly).

Rims were perfect which makes me think they may have repaired those - hard to imagine they never got curbed once in 6700 miles of test drives and service loaner duty.

The alignment was way off. Windshield sprayers were pretty hilarious before they adjusted them on the spot at delivery. And the communication leading up to delivery was non-existent.

To answer your question though, if I was purchasing and not leasing, the car would have to be nearly perfect or I wouldn't take it. A car with only 2700 miles on it sold as brand new should be brand new regardless of what some here will say ("if you want new pay for new" etc).

When I was picking up my car two days ago (it was an inventory car with ~650 miles on it), they told me that if I find anything during my inspection, they will show it to the manager at the SC to see if they can remedy the problem without charge. Sounds like someone at the SC gets to make that decision.

Fortunately I found nothing that needed to be corrected.

I picked up a inventory model x on Saturday. It was in perfect condition as far as I can tell. I'm sure if i get this one wrapped (partially or full) , the detail guy will complain about the paint quality. I had a fair amount of time to inpsect the car as the paperwork was not correct. It took a couple of hours once the mistake was found as all of the paperwork had to be redone in California.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully I won’t have anything serious enough to get “managers approval”. I’m planning to send a list of the obvious things I want checked prior to taking delivery. The nearest Tesla showroom is 4 hours away and I want to leave with the car.

The first pictures they sent of the X already shows the FWD’s way out of alignment but I hear that’s pretty common and hopefully fixable.

Based on our experience... just picked up a month ago... 2k miles inventory Model X... one paint chip on hood touched up on delivery... also noted tow package and am waiting for that from service... back ordered. The car was otherwise in fine shape... missing the sunshade... noted and recieved... that was it. Great car for 10k off... I can live with that.

I picked up my MX inventory in early December, the windshield had a crack on it, had to be replaced. The hood had a few paint chips, at least 4, touch up made it look worse. Rim was scraped, they repaired it. Had a few other things that they had to work on before I accepted delivery. Was really disappointed in a way that I had to draw attention to these obvious flaws, would have thought that the car would be looked at and examined before it was presented for delivery. Many flaws we're attributed to "inventory accepted wear and tear" , but we want you to be happy! In reality the price difference between current specs and the car I bought was only 6K. I wished I had bought a custom car, but I didn't want to wait. I wished I had! I love the car though, but had a terrific experience at car delivery. Did I mention there was a price difference of 3.5K between the lower price listed on my Tesla account car build vs the quote given to me and I had to pay the higher price. I hope someone sees this and reaches out to me. The experience needs to be a positive one, just like the car, the Tesla team needs to be mindful and work on this, especially with a deluge of electrical car options being presented at CES.

A couple things come to my mind when I think back on my delivery.

Purchased my MX as an inventory/demo model with about 2700 miles on it. Before we got to look at the car they had us sign the paperwork including a document that stated everything was fine with the car. The delivery specialist guaranteed that if anything was found wrong they would repair it even with us signing the document. I hadn't been on the forums yet and in a moment of poor judgement we signed. We were so lucky that nothing was wrong with the car that would raise concern, but looking back I wish I had not signed anything until after we inspected the car. Lesson learned, I wont be making that mistake again.

Otherwise everything checked out fine with the car, a few minor fit and finish details were found over the course of a couple days after delivery. I had called our Owner Adviser about the issues and he said I would need to call their SC directly but that some of the issues I had could not be resolved because that was why you got a discount on the car. I wasn't too happy about that answer but understood where he was coming from. I called the SC and spoke to them about the issues, including my "discount" issues and they didn't question any of it. They scheduled me for maintenance and all was taken care of.

Moral of the story for me and everyone else: don't sign any paperwork until you have had a chance to at least look at the car. Also if you got a inventory model or demo model, it is still being sold to you as a new car. You have every right to get any issues you find corrected, otherwise walk away because you didn't sign anything.

Ditto X 100!

Always inspect the car before you sign for it.
