Is 2016 used model X from New Jersey allowed for CA HOV decal?

I am planning to but a 2016 Model X from New Jersey. I really like the car and I was wondering if that car is eligible for HOV decal in California ?

If the car has never been registered in CA, you are good to go. And now you can get the purple sticker (good for almost 4 years).

actually, i thought it would have to be a 2017-2018 model. i dont believe 2016 would qualify, but i'm definitely not an expert in this.

AFAIK any qualifying vehicle under CA HOV rules can get a sticker...and depending on if and when it was originally stickered you get the red ones (originally stickered 2017 or 2018) or purple ones (never stickered). And as I understand it, there is an extra income test, so vehicles stickered before 2017 (and theoretically not eligible to be re-stickered with a red sticker) can get re-stickered if you meet the means test.

You can verify whether it has been registered prior to 2017 (and thus ineligible) by searching for the VIN here:
