Is auto tuning dead with EVs

Just wondering what others think about the future of performance tuning in the EV world. Thinking more about the classic HP tuning squeezing out more torque etc. For example I would think it would be illegal to hack model 3 software to say try and make a 3D a P3D. Maybe there will come a day when a "motor swap" will actually be a motor swap lol. Anyway just wondering what others think.

Not dead. Just a different skillset (computer programming) . 2014 Tesla Model S P90++ - UNIQUE: Most powerful RWD Tesla in the world

I think you are somewhat correct that there are fewer knobs to turn on an EV motor compared to ICE, but this doesn't mean we can't have fun. Instead we can spend money on wheels, tires, suspension, brakes, carbon fiber parts, maybe even aftermarket cooling systems for the motors. Plenty of other things that you can do to prepare the car for racing since it's already quick (0-60) but needs some coaxing to become fast.

It certainly is possible as most is controlled by software. The issue is more Tesla being connected to your car and seeing what modifications you are doing and then take action that isn't in your best interest. They will deny you updates altogether, refure warranty and so on.

Aftermarket uncorking, just curious as to the legal implications and how tesla will respond.

Nothing especially illegal about doing this to a car you own.

But Tesla can lock you out of OTA updates, potentially lock you out of supercharging, and potentially refuse warranty service.

Which is why mainly you see guys doing it on salvage title Teslas they built themselves.

As batteries get cheaper and a million EVs hit the road, it will be fun to take a car with a small battery and replace it will a battery with twice the capacity. If done right, might get double the horsepower. Will take some years before people figure out how to replace the motors and update the software.

Depends. Here it's already illegal to tune your ICE. No one cares much about it though and it's pretty common. But it's still illegal to drive a car with more power than the papers says it's got.

I don't see why it would more or less illegal than tuning an ICE. May void your warranty and could also prevent your vehicle from getting updates or supercharged but you would be free to do to your vehicle whatever mods you'd like.

Do people do it anyway in Sweden? Tinted windows and no front plates are illegal in some some states but most people just ignore them and cops usually don't give you a hassle.

The difference between the P3D and the 3D isn't just a motor.

However if you want to spend $9k for a motor and see for yourself......go ahead.

Tuners will be able to easily tune an EV for a specific event.
Could have a drag race tune that essentially will drain the entire battery in the 1/4 mile run.
For short stints they could drain current faster than if they had a longer duration.
Could modify the drive gears to optimize for the speeds at the track.

This year a specially built and tuned EV won the overall Pikes Peak race, and set a new all time record doing it.

The future for EV racing is bright. Gassers are soon to have some new competition.
