Is it possible to charge my Tesla Model 3 from a 4kw generator?

In the event of some catastrophe, is it possible to charge my Tesla Model 3 from a 4kw generator?

Depends on whether it puts out a clean power frequency or not (most dont).

I've tried charging with a 5.5 kw generator. Besides several 120V receptacles, it also has a L14-30 receptacle. So I bought the evseadapters UMC L14-30 adapter for it. The car doesn't start charging until I dial the current down to about 11 or 12 amps. So with that particular generator, it doesn't supply a quality output anywhere near its advertised capability.

In general, only inverter generators will work consistently. You may also need to bond ground-neutral to get it working with 120Vac generator output. 240Vac would provide better efficiency.

I've charged my Model 3 on a Predator 2000 watt generator. I have a plug I made that ties neutral to ground and plug that into one of the two power outlets. The car won't accept the generator without it. It is an inverter generator.

When running, the generator delivers a solid 120 volts at 12 amps to the car.

I don’t think it is practical to get range from it. Possible and practical are two different things.
