Is my car the one with worst paint job and service center help?

Hey all,

I took delivery on Sunday Sep 2 the day before Labor Day at Marina Del Rey in Southern California. My car looked beautiful inside the delivery building. Delivery guy went over a few things with me then drove car outside and told me to have a few minutes to familiarize myself with the car and I could drive away when ready. It was a cloudy day and I walked around the car and didn’t notice any defects so jumped in my new car and drove home.

The next day was a clear sunny day. This is when I noticed a lot of spots on paint when the sun hits it at certain angles. The hood is the worst and looks really bad every time I walk towards my car. I decided to wait to contact tesla the next day since it was Labor Day. On Sep 4th I emailed my delivery specialist but got auto reply that he’s not available till Thursday but he sent me the contact information for his backup person. I forwarded this person my concerns and waited for reply that never came.

On Sep 8th I called Tesla service center and spoke with Mike. He said he tried getting appointment but couldn’t set up and he won’t be back to work till Tuesday so he’ll give me a call on Tuesday 11th. Tuesday comes and no call from Mike so on Sep 12th I then called tesla local center again and spoke with Matt, he scheduled app for Sep 13th 1:45 pm local service center. He said that I will drop off my car and they will have a loaner X for me. I asked how long the process is as I need to know if I’ll take the day off from work or just go in a little late. He said the process will be a couple hours so I decide to take a day off work.

On Sep 12 I received call from lady at service center that I can’t take my car on the 13th as they don’t like to take same day or 1 day appointments and that I have to go trough delivery specialist first. I explained that I already emailed specialist about paint issue but got no reply. She said to forward her my correspondence with specialist and paint photos. She scheduled service appointment for Sep 27 8:00.

Sep 27 service center appointment. Met with Blake who took my info and looked over my car. He said looks like it’s a problem with the clear coat and that he will order parts for some other issues I have found since I’ve been waiting. He said I can’t drop off my car for paint issues yet and he will set up appointment when parts come in. Whole process took 15 min so I lost the whole day off work for this.

On Oct 18 and haven’t heard from Tesla so I call and spoke with Rosie. She said she didn’t find any notes on my car or me being there on Sep 27. I gave her the name of young man who took my info and that he also took pictures of my car with his cell phone. I also asked that I’m wiling to change to another service center if it will speed up the process. She said she will get a hold of the guy who took my info and get back to me.

It is now Oct 26 and I haven’t got a call back from her so I call and she said that unfortunately they found no notes on my car and I would need to schedule a new service appointment. I am now starting to get really upset and worst by remembering that I paid $2000 extra for this paint color.

Trunk weatherstrip seal, small gap on right side.

Big gap on left side. Blake the young man who looked over my car at service appointment said this is not a problem as there’s nothing that will damage by water entering that gap. I told him that even if there’s no chance of water damage I want it fixed cause it looks bad so he said they’ll see what they can do but no guarantee.

Did you try taking a clay bar with some lube to those spots?
No I haven’t as I don’t want to be blamed for the damage but it looks like it’ll only come off with some sanding. There are over 30 spots I’ve seen so far, from small as a small finger print to as large as the 6” wide splatter on hood. I’ve washed my car 8 times since I got it and no amount of rubbing gets any of the spots off.

You'd be surprised what a clay bar can take off. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot on a small spot. If it's stuck in the clear coat, it might be removable. But your weather strip problems -- the small one doesn't look too bad but that large one.. wow.

I tried pulling that weather strip to see if I could snap it in place but it wouldn’t budge, looks like it’s shaped to its form and will have to be replaced.

Are you able to drive over to the service center, and speak to someone? I'm sure they'll be able to take the notes and see that you are serious about getting these issues addressed.

Also, I would see what an auto detailer says about it. Most of those might be able to be polished out. Clay won't be very effective.

The time I went it took me 1hr15 min to get there and I also lost a day of work. I just contacted another service center and explained my situation and gave them the names of the persons that I saw at that service center. They scheduled me for an appointment for Nov 2 and they will contact the 1st service center to see if they can find any notes on my car.

It sucks to deal with these sorts of things on a new car, but those all look like they could be buffed out. Nowhere near as bad as straight up poor coverage, scratches and chips in the color coat that I had. Hopefully they get your car all sorted out and a happy customer.

The bumper and weatherstripping gaps are the same in mine as well. There’s a thread about this issue and it seems like everyone else has something similar and according to the SC it’s “within specs.”
