READY FOR THE ANSWER!?

The best answer at what works in this scenario comes from @jerry33 so good on you!

Short version, get in passenger side, shut the door and touch the screen within 30 seconds.

If you touch the screen before handles retract (about 30 seconds) it will wake up from black and stay usable for a period of time (rumor is 30 minutes, I didn't test). Allowing you to have radio and HVAC as you sit there as your own passenger while supercharging.

I imagine, but didn't check, that so long as you periodically interact with the console it will continue to stay alive for 30 minutes following your last interaction.

If you don't touch the screen before the handles retract then touching the black console will not wake it. (This must be what happened to me and why I started the thread.) I think this workaround works for all parked scenarios, charging or not, of any kind.

For the record, here were the methods tried, and their result:

1. Leave driver door ajar, then shut once you're in the passenger seat. Doesn't work. What happens: when you're the passenger reaching over and shutting the driver door, the console goes black and HVAC and radio cut out as soon as it shuts. So the car did not continue to stay on by virtue of having a passenger bum in the seat. However, you can save this situation by touching the screen within 30 seconds, before handles retract.

2. As the driver leaving the car, get your butt out of the seat then reaching in with one foot press the brake pedal, before shutting that door. Doesn't work. What happens: car popup warning saying something about not being able to drive, check your chargeport. (open). The console goes black immediately after shutting driver door, everything cuts out. Save the day by getting into the passenger side and touching the screen within 30 seconds, before handles retract. Starting to see the successful pattern here.

3. Leave car in Drive, use console control to set Parking brake. Doesn't work, can't even do it. What happens: The car cannot be in Drive and charging at the same time. Car must be in Park. I played around with this idea some more with SC cable unplugged. Car won't open the chargeport if not in Park. Some people use this as a "camping mode". I played around some more not worrying about SC just to get familiar with camping mode. Knowing you can't be charging while you do this HVAC will be depleting your battery, if that's OK, great. Also, the DRL lights on the car stay on in this mode so there is no way to get total darkness on the front of the car in this mode. Bring shades to cover them if you don't want to keep fellow campers illuminated. Maybe after some period of time the DRL will go off... but I didn't wait around to see.

Thanks ALL!
