Hey, everyone.

I found a listing on Craigslist (I know...sketchy, but I was bored at work) and I came across a 2015 P85D with 36K miles for $47,500. I know, seems too good to be true. However, I figured why not message? The worst thing that happens is I get an email back asking me to wire money or something. Well, I did get an email back like this:

Hi, I am unable to see your message. If you are interested in my Tesla please email me using my work email below to discuss further.

Regards,
James

So, I proceeded to email his Virgin Atlantic email. Here is what I said:

I emailed several people about their cars. Are you selling the 2015 P85D?

If so, just a few questions for you. Is the car’s title clean (i.e. not rebuilt)? Is the car still under warranty? Have you had any major work done to it while it had been under warranty? Does it come from a smoke-free, pet-free home? Do you have the option of purchasing the extended warranty? How many rated miles will it travel when charged to 100%?

Thank you for your time. I apologize for so many questions.

I waited for one day and received this response:

Hi, the Tesla is still available for $47,500. It has 36,082 miles, clean title, no accidents and no money owing on it, and I recently had it inspected by the specialists from National Auto Inspections LLC and has been rated in excellent condition. I have attached both the AutoCheck Report and the Inspection Report to this email for you.
I am a pilot and I just got a very good contract with Virgin Atlantic in London and I need the money for an advance on a house here in UK, that's why I am in a hurry to sell it.
I have left the vehicle there in US at a freight company, with all the paperwork (title signed by me, keys, service records, etc) so they can handle everything for me.

In that email, he also attached a Carchex and Autocheck inspection form that I uploaded to this thread. So, I need your help. This seems like a lot of effort to be a scam, but I imagine people will do a lot of things for almost $50K. Moreover, I searched for Virgin's email handle and saw several different ones, none of which matched this one. I guess I am struggling with why a fully loaded P85D would only be $47,500 if this wasn't a scam. Perhaps this person did need to leave immediately for their job and needs to sell it fast. However, at $60K, the car will still sell fast.

With all that said, I haven't emailed the individual back yet. My wife doesn't think it is a scam, but I am fairly certain it is. Should I proceed with extreme caution? Thanks for your time.

100% scam. They ALWAYS start out this way. It's bull****. They can read it just fine.

Never, EVER give a CL "seller" your real email address. The CL anonymous remailer works fine despite what the scammers claim. The scammers want your direct email and to avoid using CL.

All it takes is to look at the domain of his email address, which is crafted to look legit: pilotsvirginatlanticeurope.com (safe to click link, it's a domain parking page, obviously not real)

Also, the WHOIS for that domain is:
Registrant Name: PERFECT PRIVACY, LLC
Creation Date: 2018-04-25
Registrant Organization:
Registrant Street: 12808 Gran Bay Parkway West
Registrant City: Jacksonville
Registrant State/Province: FL
Registrant Postal Code: 32258
Registrant Country: US
Registrant Phone: 1.5707088786

IANAP, but from what I've learned about airline pilots, that paragraph says "I am not a pilot".

Scam Scam Scam!!!!!! Went through the same thing, when I asked for test drive they bailed. Not before they told me to pay some escrow agent via Edmunds. Called Edmunds, Edmunds don't do escrow in any way shape or form. Sad people are out there just scamming.

There are just as many scammers out there "buying" as there are "selling". I received multiple inquiries when I recently sold my ICE car that wanted me to run a VIN check at a specific website. Seemed fishy, and a quick check showed the sites were not legit. They just wanted my credit card info. My car was posted on Autotrader, and several of the scammers reached out to me by text claiming to be very interested in my car and willing to pay full asking price without even looking at it.

Be careful out there!

Definitely a scam. Mine "just got hired" at British Airways:

Hi, the Tesla still available for $48,500. I am a pilot and I just got a very good contract with British Airways in London and I need the money for an advance on a house in the next 2, 3 weeks so that's the reason for selling the Tesla like this.
I have left the car there at a company to handle everything for me, with all the paperwork (title, keys, service records). It has around 48k miles, clean title, no accidents and no money owing on it, and I had it been inspected last month by the specialists from National Auto Inspections LLC (Carchex.com) and has been rated in excellent condition, here is the inspection report:https://www.carchex.com.us-autos.info/inspect/report/print.aspx/Id=5YJSA1H24EFP66081

Let me know if you are still interested and here is a link with more photos that were taken the same day the inspection was made: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9Ch9nGD8YGvDijXc2

This was from several months back, and I think at the time the links were active (or maybe I never even clicked on them because I smelled a scam from his very first email saying to use the personal account?), so I'm not surprised they are now dead. I did notice the extra URL info, and after this email started playing with the guy. Got more and more info, and he actually went down the rabbit hole pretty deep with quite a bit of detailed information. Finally he told me the car was stored in an Edmonds location in Detroit (the original listing was for Vegas, I think) and when I googled the address of the location he gave me it was some obscure location. I was overall impressed with how much time he had put into trying to scam. But I guess if these guys even get a single bite in a year, they're making a pretty good living.

Buyers Beware, and of course, always be smart about these things!
