Was just going to upgrade the trunk light, however found something peculiar after peeling back the liner in the 3rd quarter panel….

You are able to remove since it’s not glued. It’s the size of a small shoe box. Is this normal for sound deadening or should I remove it?

The most bizarre thing I have ever seen.

It's completely normal, mine has it too. It's just sound dampening material. It's meant to reduce reverberations around the rear wheel wells. The trunk is particularly bad at reverberating road vibrations (though most of the road noise seem to be transferred to the vehicle by the coilovers)

Yes noticed it on my MIC RWD Jan 2022 built. I saw it on both rear above wheel arch while putting sound-deadening mats on. Upon seeing that wifey was saying she still prefers Toyota / Hyundai for built quality and I'd to make dinner for myself yesterday after some opinions were exchanged. :)
