Is this normal for the Key Card?

I typically have my iPhone with me but today I forgot it, so I did the following:
  1. No phone on me.
  2. Use key card to unlock car and immediately put in my left jeans pocket.
  3. Was able to put car in gear and drive off without the key on the center console.
Is this how it's supposed to function? Only asking because when I got to my destination, I locked the car with the key card, went shopping, came back to the car and repeated steps 1 & 2, but this time it wasn't drivable until I put the card on the console.

From the manual:
Once inside, power up Model Y by pressing the brake pedal within two minutes of scanning the key card (see Starting and Powering Off on page 49). If you wait longer than two minutes, you must re-authenticate by placing the key card near the card reader located behind the cup holders on the center console. When your key card is detected, your two minute authentication period restarts.
