Is this unusual to have to replace the rear drive unit and rear calipers at 95K miles on a model S (2013)? And is it a reasonable cost?

Not like I have any choice, I have to fix the car
To answer your question, no it is not unusual to have these repairs. You have a 9 year old car, of course you are going to have repairs. There are many other cars which would have had the brakes done several times in 95,000 miles, not to mention many thousands of dollars of other repairs. Unfortunately every early model S will all have their drive units fail, which is the second most costly item to repair in the car.

It is reasonable to fix anything at $195 per hour? That question is more debatable, but it is what it is. The brakes can be fixed anywhere; nothing special about Tesla brakes. But you can count on your fingers the number of third party shops who could fix it properly.

If you are not aware (and with 4 posts it is probably you are not) you could try Services | 057 Technology and see if they have any time to squeeze you in for a drive unit replacement amongst their extensive battery repairs, maybe some previously owned calipers installed for you as well.

Outside of the DU and battery, what necessitated all the brake and suspension replacements? Damage? Normal maintenance of calipers would have them last a lifetime.
Did the car just not start one day so you dropped it off and asked them to find everything that was wrong? I don’t see diagnosis verbiage in your cut’n’paste.

Yeah but maaany people that don’t understand cars hear “EV no maintenance” and then don’t do *anything*

I'm in the NE with salt and snow etc... My 2012 (over 100K) calipers and pads are in great shape -pads still have about 70% on them, so are the rotors, so I am confused as to why yours need replacement - particularly the rear... I will say I had one odd brake problem that was easily resolved- after 10 years, the adhesive that holds the asbestos/ceramic pad to the pad backing on one of my parking brake pads cause the pad part to fall off. I guess that from "lack of use" lol.

There was another big thread recently that showed EVERY Model S will have drive units fail due to internal leaks.
To be more specific, it is the large drive unit (like the OP has) that is prone to failure. Small rear drive units are okay.

Not sure why they want to replace the rear calipers. It is difficult to read your estimate and there was no mention of brake problems. Did you have a problem with them? It would be highly unlikely that both calipers were to actually need replacing at 95k.

Yeah good point....unless the pistons are leaking or he's basically parking in salt, it'd be pretty odd for calipers to need replacing. Especially rears....they see so much less abuse compared to the fronts.
