I think the X and I will both be shopped as “utility” vehicles despite their size differences. Car shopping isn’t a totally rational process for most customers and if one is looking for a crossover the Model 3 simply wont be on the list to consider.

The comparison also dramatically highlights how grossly inefficient the I-Pace seems to be. The Model X is huge, heavy, powerful, can seat seven and tow a real boat. Somehow the compact Jag uses way more fuel.

I came to the X from a Chevrolet Volt. The X is around 15% larger in every direction, and about 30% heavier - and has the same EPA efficiency rating.

If GM had built a small SUV like the iPace with first generation Volt technology, I suspect the efficiency would fall about where the iPace does. Tesla is just doing better.

Tesla has been doing it a lot longer. This is what people forget when they talk about competitors coming to east Tesla's lunch next year... they may take a nibble, but Tesla's battery and power train technology is 3 years ahead.

He pointed out he came from a Chevrolet Volt. They sold the first one in Dec 2010!! GM has had plenty of time (decade since first working on/designing the Volt)

In fairness GM’s newest electrified offerings are substantially more efficient than those which came before. GM may be second only to Tesla in EV IP.
Trailing Tesla I would say the koreans with great offers from Hyundai and Kia, 4 models. The Bolt EV is LG components all over, so not GMs Ip?Then VW/Audi (e-golf is great) and Jaguar battles out before Nissan/Renault that has not yet produced a water could battery pack.

Fsscinating that a car that costs 40 percent less can hold a candle to the Jag and considering this Alex dude doesn't know much about the best part of a Tesla, that it's an EV. He's straight up wrong about charging networks as they currently stand, too.

You are right, this is where a lot of people purchasing the Jag and Porsche will get burned, regular long distance EV travel in the US is a Tesla only deal, with the sparsity of Combo and CHAdeMO stations. I bet there will be great deals to be had on these used at 20k off MSRP in a year.

Odd that the vast majority of auto reviewers love the I-Pace to death and yet it's crapped on here.
Because most people here understand the “vital statistics” of what makes a great EV - efficiency, range and performance. Realistically the Jag only has 1 of those.

There’s also a double standard by mainstream auto journalists who assume anything from an “established” car maker such as Jag is naturally amazing (even when it is quite average), whereas anything from the new kid Tesla is put down to beginners luck that the old automakers will quickly surpass “if they really wanted to”.

The fact is that Tesla are EV specialists who have built up a lot of IP that most others can’t match right now. Now I like the I-Pace it’s a great first effort, but it is faaaar from perfect or a Tesla killer.

A lot of people on here are very close minded. Not everyone though.

You must also remember about the location of where people are. The i-Pace in UK and a lot of Europe will sell well. There are large non-Tesla charging infrastructures about. US is a different market, and I can see it struggling there.

Styling is also another one, I hate the X and interior of the 3. The i-PACE does win massively in this regard for me. The range is poor considering though.

The price in the UK is cheaper than X and S (we do not have the 3 yet and the 3 is unlikely to be much cheaper).

At the end of the day, it's all about differing tastes and opinions.

Looks like we have some I-Pace real world charging reports from the 150kW chargers recently opened...

Hey Jaguar, where is that 100kW charging that my car is supposed to accept ? ? ?

I do love the "glass half full" mindset though: "Aside from slower than expected, this was totally awesome" !

Yep... Totally Frigging Awesome ;)
