James Murdoch's appointment to the board..

The appointment of Murdoch is concerning. It is hard for me to understand why he was chosen given his past issues.

Fortunately he cannot adversely influence the future of Tesla, he's just one board member. But why him of all people?

It's not like he's a successful international entrepreneur who has strong ties to the media. Anything but that! You'd think Tesla Motors likes free advertising or something. The major reason he's a weak choice is that he's 86 years old. Not exactly a long term appointment.

Couple things:

As Brian Stephenson - advocate against mass incarceration in the US - says, "We should not be judged or branded based on our worst decision." Mistakes are made, and in our current society, cause for not stepping back for a wider look. Many have posted here and elsewhere that the son is not the father and moving 21st Century away from right-wing infotainment. We will see. But this feels like Elon's participation on Trumps committees, which was wildly unpopular and which he navigated extremely adroitly and to his benefit. Time will tell.

Indeed. The young Murdoch's under scrutiny now, as his Dad has been many times. It's difficult to find anyone with global, conglomerate build out experience not having tripped up. And Linda Johnson Rice, despite all her credentials, sat on the Board of Continental Bank which was bailed out by the Fed not just once, or twice, but by the third time the Fed hauled in Bank of America to buy it. Not convinced either of these two are a prize other than sophisticated media experience and access which Tesla lacks. I find more business chops and value in him, than her..

It's his son, James, the one who's not married to Mick Jagger's ex.

Both of these people are unquestionable media mavens. Both have events in their careers that give serious pause. Both have inherited positions to some degree. Both have shown they have more moderate perspectives than did their antecedents.

I think they both know a great deal about coping with bad public responses, both know how to evolve to a rapidly changing media atmosphere.

Tell me please, is it possible to find anyone with the media qualifications Tesla needs who does not have some notoriety? That is not a rhetorical question. I cannot think of anybody.

The problem with Stephenson's theory is that we seldom incarcerate people on the first offenses, and never incarcerate them on the ones that are not prosecuted successfully.

Folk who are sociopaths, rarely spend a day in jail their whole lives, but leave a tornado of destruction that marks their existence. Others eventually end up in jail. We have very few people in jail that have a functional moral compass.

Same is true for business leaders and politicians. Some are destructive their whole lives, others are stopped by something.

It is strange that the media isn't torching President Trump on his bankruptcies. That's a serious problem. Not this silly Russia crap or the provably false concept that Trump is a white supremacist. You are not morally damaged by things you DON'T do. You are morally corrupt by things you actually do. Walking out of a BK with millions might be legal, but it shows how trustworthy you are, which is zilch. You will borrow money and then use the courts to go back on your word and honor.

As far as Elon dropping out of the industrial think tank? He now fits right in. A guy who makes underwear in China, badges it, then sells it at a massive profit to US yuppies just quit also for "moral" grounds. HAHAHAHA!!! Naw. Mr. UnderArmor quit because Trump is going to attempt to level the playing field with China. People are not quitting that committee for altruistic reasons. They are quitting due to the President's stance on equalized trade with China. Greed today vs. our children's future.
