Joint gap in M3 tailgate

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has seen anything similar to this? On the tailgate on our M3, along the weld/joint between the panel the number plate is attached to and the panel the number plate illumination lights are mounted in, there's a unpainted "gap". I'm not sure if it should be welded, or it's missing some frame sealant - it's certainly missing paint!

Anyone had anything similar and (how) was it resolved?

Thanks, Neil.

(Sorry for the crappy photo, haven't got enough clearance in the garage to open the boot fully! Not enough hands :))
