Just Ordered 16.32kW w/2 Powerwalls

Did anyone ever figure anything out on this? I was lurking for awhile hoping Brett’s experiment would work.
Last year, the rep I was working with swore that an 18.9kW system would pair nicely with two power walls. I didn’t end up purchasing, though.
Right now, if I go to the solar roof page, it suggests a 17.5KW roof with 2 powerwalls. What’s up with that? I’m not sure how to resolve this.

What we know for sure is that a system over, say 12kwh, can, on a good day, send right around 10kwh to the house. Each powerwall can accept up to 5kw. Systems produce about 85% of their rating, so that part of the math is simple. Three powerwalls gets you to 15kw which is likely enough for the XL 16.32 system.

What we don't know is exactly what happens when power from the panels exceeds number of powerwalls times 5kw during an outage. Even though BrettS tried to test it. Either the system would "clip" (see another thread regarding inverters for when the power from the panels exceeds the inverters), or the system would completely shut down. Its the latter that's worrying.

It would be great if Tesla started making their own solar inverter with better integration. For a company that loves vertical integration, I’m surprised they haven’t done this yet.

So, OP here.

Thought I would call in to check on my 16.32 now 3 PW system. According to Telsa guy on phone, preliminary plans are done and city had a question about the meter location, and someone from the city was going to come out and look. So it is (1) order, (2) one week later Tesla physical inspection, and (3) one week after that they allegedly have plans and are checking with the city.

I am sure there will be some sort of panel upgrade, the main panel looks old and the one subpanel looks really micky mouse. But in my case location appears straightforward (all stuff on outside of house where existing meter, existing main panel and line from utility pole comes in). It is, however, a whole house back up so no re-routing needs to occur.

We will see.

Thanks for updating. There was a very good discussion in this thread so I hope it doesnt get lost to the forum "ether" at some point. Looking forward to hearing about your install, etc.

I would urge anyone who is trying to decide what they think is a simple question "how many Powerwalls should I get?" to read this thread from the beginning for the excellent, really good explanations from some other posters.

The responses were triggered by my initial order of 16.32 and two powerwalls, which I learned is a mismatch in a couple of perhaps important ways but is something that Tesla will sell.

Its new technology, and a complicated question, so you get a complicated answer.

What I need to do next while waiting for permits is link to the "how many Powerwalls do I need to deal with a central A/C unit turning on in an outage?" thread, which addresses what is to my mind the second, bit technical question.

I would say more than one, without question. There are many posts from a person who has had alot of trouble with two, despite the fact that Tesla says two Powerwalls will provide whole home back up. Its one reason I went to three. I am not sure, by the way, that three Powerwalls is a sure fire no-way-it-can't-work solution either, so I plan on testing.

Be aware, by the way, that less than three Powerwalls very likely leads one into a "partial back up" wiring situation - there is no way around it, unless you have a home which uses very little electricity. I believe, although there is no thread on it yet that I have seen, that the extra costs in doing the extra wiring (including extra sub-panels) really operates to make the "third Powerwall" even cheaper if the "extra" powerwall allows you to avoid the extra cost of the partial home back up electrical work.

This weeks update. According to Tesla, they are waiting on LADWP to physically take a look at the outside meter/panel. Now, I happen to know the meter reader guy did that today (incredibly, in 2020 a guy actually comes out to look at it) when he came to read the meter, but he may well have only "read the meter."

I also confirmed that LADWP has two sizes, simplified approval for 10kwh or under, and a bit more paperwork for more, which is what mine is of course.

Good news was that according to today's Tesla chap, LADWP was not known for second guessing the size of installations requested.

Well, I guess LADWP did look at the panel, or my call today got something moving, because I got to sign an "interconnection agreement" and then got a confirmation email from LADWP itself that the interconnection agreement had been submitted and they had opened a file. LADWP has a specific portal for solar requests and I got a specific email as well.

Well, first thing this morning LADWP showed up to make a physical inspection. I was pleased with the fact that they got right on it. I would say though, that all this seemed to me was about verifying where the new panel would go. For me installation, that's not an issue so it was a pretty short visit.

So, today it appears the final plans are either "done" or "pretty close to really being submitted" as Tesla (1) confirmed my agreement to a main panel upgrade (2) sent me a contract, and (3) had me qualify for the loan.

It was all extremely efficient. I will probably call in to see if I can see the actual plans next week, although in my particular case the plans won't be very interesting. But based on all I have read I will make sure to confirm they are correct.

Well, the plans have been submitted and LADWP is apparently OK with them. Now, because of the size of the system (those with under 10kwh systems may have been installed by the time I type this -- over 10kwh and you have the same set of approvals as any other construction project) LA Dept of Building and Safety has opened its file, as of Sept 17. Hope to get the go ahead soon.

With the main panel and main load center upgrade completed I am now scheduled for install Feb 1 and 2. Yippee!

Also, Moderator, its 3 Powerwalls now. :)

Hoping to get my son to get a friend out with a drone for some shots.
