Just pulled the trigger

Pulled the trigger on a 2017 100D model x on 8/12. Red exteriors with ultra white interiors - a pretty rare combination I am looking for, especially since it's available in Fremont where I can just drive over in 30 min to pick up.

So far, the reservation experience is pretty terrible. Trade-in valuation promised within 24 hours, got back only after 48+hrs. Valuation on my bmw 5 series is crap and seriously low-ball as well (30% less than kbb trade-in), but I'll just take the hit of a few grand to save the trouble. Communications is almost non-existent. Had a single call with sales advisor who just told me to keep waiting, with later calls directed to voice mail. No replies on email at all. Oh well, now just waiting on a delivery date, hoped it could have been faster since the car is literally just 10-20 miles away.

Seen it used before. Still don't understand why people say "pulled the trigger".

Moving on. First thing you want do new '17 X owner - get in line to upgrade the MCU to MCU2. Worth every dime. Yes, yes, I know, your car is under warranty. Doesn't change the fact that MCU2 is the single best thing you can do for your new-used X.

I purchased a 19 LR from Fremont used inventory and was assigned to a used car specialist based in CO.
I decided not to trade in because Tesla’s trade in value wasn’t even fair.
Surprisingly that it only took me 6 days from placing the order to have it directly delivered to my home.

WRT to your trade -in, visit a Carmax location and have them give you a price. Tesla will generally match a Carmax quote. I got another grand on a used Toyota. In fact Tesla suggested I do that. They are not very good pricing up non-Tesla trade-ins.

We ordered two different used Model Xs, a 2016 and 2017. We ended up declining the 2016, as we didn’t find it as comfortable as others we had driven. We accepted the 2017.

The used car experience is weird with Tesla. You can’t even go look at the car you are thinking about buying, let alone test drive it. Honestly, it is a reason not to buy from Tesla, BUT, the extended warranty makes up for it. Our 2017 with 47k miles now has four more years of warranty, which has got to be worth several thousand dollars.

We still have MCU1 in our X. Not as nice as the MCU2 in our Model 3, but if you upgrade, you lose the FM radio, which is a bummer. What I’m thinking is that when our MCU1 fails, we will upgrade at that point. I have heard that some folks under warranty got the upgrade for free. Fingers crossed!

Over the past 12-15 months more than one person thought they got MCU2 when their MCU failed. Turned out to be no. This gentleman even unknowingly helps us invalidate his MCU2. I'm sure he means well, but I think he's mistaken. I have no intention of making him look or feel back, again, I believe he is simply mistaken. He starts off explaining IN #10 his X has MCU1. Then in #13, he states it was replaced a year+ ago. MCU2 first came out in April 2018 in productions/factory cars. As recent as Oct/Nov '19 (less than a year ago) Elon said MCU2 still would not work in older cars. MCU2 was announced and put in the first owner's cars in Mar 2020. Mine was installed 24 Mar 2020 and was accidentally one of the first. So, its highly highly unlikely he got MCU2, but be did get another MCU1 or new Touchscreen.

Teslacam and Sentry rolled out in a software update. And we were told it would work with MCU1 but it was not recording files to media. This led a lot of us to think something was wrong with what we were doing, but it simply was not working properly with MCU1/AP2.0

Its not hard now to check which MCU is installed. Simply look under Software > Other Vehicle Information. Infotainment Processor will read Intel Atom if its MCU2 and Tegra if MCU1.

Thanks for the info.

The way I think it should work is, because the upgrade is $2500 for MCU2, compared to $1500 to replace MCU1 out of warranty, if you have a warranty replacement of MCU1 which means the replacement is free, there should be an option to pay the $1k difference to get MCU2.

Probably wishful thinking on my part.
