Key not in car

Today I put my key in my tennis bag in the trunk and went back in the house, then I went back out to leave and the doors would not open. Opened the trunk and door handles extended. Drove about 1000 feet and a warning came on the dash saying key not in car, car will not start. Wondering what caused that, I had not problem the rest of the day.

low battery maybe, or the key in your bag is being shielded?

Sometimes if my key is my pocket and the phone is on top of it the doors won't open(MS HW1) or I would get the same message while in the driver's seat.
