kids friendly superchargers from SD to SF?

Planning our first road trip from San Diego to San Francisco.. I know there are plenty of SCs along the I-5 or 101.. But we have a 1-yr old, and we do want to stretch her little legs along the way preferable at an indoor playground (like the Westfield).. Any chance a supercharger is located next to a kid's playground?

Thanks in advance!!

Hello. I do this drive a few times a year, usually in an ICE. My two boys are 5 and 1.5.

This may not answer your question, but whatever I plan usually goes out the window, especially if the little one is on a regular bottle schedule.

Bravo Farms at Kettleman City has a nice enclosed area kids can run around.

Kettleman City also has the distinction of being one of the larger SC sites with 40 stalls (full power 120kw, not the new "urban" style) and an indoor "cafe" area with an espresso bar and gift shop.

Here is a link to the Bravo Farms site. Kettleman City - Bravo Farms

The Kettleman site is a fairly busy stop with a lot of gas stations and fast food chains. For adults and older kids it is about a 5 minute walk from the SC to Bravo Farms (.2 miles) but you have to cross a major intersection so you might want to drop the kids off with an adult at the Shoppes before heading to the SC to plug in. (Look at it on Google Maps with satellite view for an idea of the layout.)

Thanks for the great tip.. Bravo Farms does seem to fit the bill perfectly.. It will our 2nd stop.. The first stop will be Westfield Valencia, with Santa Clarita SC being reasonably close..

@DongTran, you have a good point in that the little one often has her own schedule..;) so will see what happens..

Note that I-5 has more choices for Supercharger stops than US-101, in case kiddo wants you to charge at other places than where you originally planned. :) Depending on the weather you might want to check traffic conditions over the Grapevine before you launch.

@Bruce, Regarding to the traffic condition comment, are you concerned on my 1st/2nd/3rd legs?

I guess you mean me. I supposed I should have said "road conditions" rather than "traffic conditions". Sometimes the part of I-5 between LA County and Kern County (sometimes referred to as "The Grapevine") can be closed due to adverse weather such as snow, or CHP might be escorting traffic over the Grapevine. You can check the current state here:

We did a round trip to LA (from the Bay Area) this past weekend. We stopped at Kettleman City on the way back, and checked out Bravo Farms for a late lunch. Food was pretty good (although I would not claim to be an expert on BBQ) and they have a nice western-themed outdoor play area. It started raining really hard when we were there so kids were inside most of the time.

Also we had snow flurries coming northbound up the Grapevine. We stopped briefly at Tejon Ranch and the workers at the Firehouse Subs were asking people what road conditions were like because some of them lived up that way and they were worried about road closures. Supposedly CHP was pacing cars going over the Grapevine but we didn't notice that.

Bruce.

PS. I'm going to move this thread to the California sub-forum...it's not just a Model X thing.

The Hollister, CA Supercharger is at Casa de Fruta, which has sort of an amusement park. I didn't check prices. We could see several peacocks and a train track going through it. Lots of old farm/mining equipment scattered around.

Casa de Fruta - Attractions for all ages

Lots of chargers, we were the only ones there a couple of weeks ago. It was an interesting place to walk and shop. That's our stop before or after Kettleman SC.

And I second the need to keep an eye on the Grapevine (the portion of I5 south of Grapevine). I've driven it in the snow long ago. A couple of weeks ago we had a police escort slowing the traffic as we went through while snow was falling.

Kettleman SC itself has a few kids toys on the wall and a big display showing busy Superchargers if you're just making a short stop.

Tejon Ranch is our favorite SC south of Kettleman, a little north of the Grapevine. Not super kid friendly I think, though there's a Baskin Robbins across the street in the Petro (?!) store. Quite a few fast food places nearer the SC.

@romeojam, job well done for opening The Play Destination that close to a Tesla Service Center and a SC. If I head for 101, will definitely make a stop here.

@TonyT, the Mainplace Mall does look like Westfield, being indoor and offering a playground for kids. The only downside is it's pretty close to my home (about 70 miles). But it's good to know, so if the little one gets cranky in the car early, maybe we can have an early stop here.

@animorph, great tip for the Hollister SC. Maybe I will use this as our final stop to save up enough juice for day cruises in SF. (I was thinking of Daly City, but this one seems more on-the-way.)

@Bruce, I didn't realize the Bravo Farms playground is outdoor only. Is it? Is there anything in the mall for the kids?

So just for reference, my name is Bruce but my user name on TMC is @bmah. I think @Bruce is probably why he's getting tagged in this thread. :):):)

Anyway, the Bravo Farms playground is outside. There's not really a play area indoors...as I recall it's basically the restaurant and a big gift-shop-like area.

(You seem to really want indoor playgrounds. Does your little one not like being outside, or are you just concerned about the wet winter we're having this year?)

Cheers,

Bruce.

@bmah, sorry about the mis-direction. Will do it right from now on.. ;)

At the Gustine supercharger, there is a Del Taco a block north (yeah, I know) that has an indoor play structure. Used it before in a pinch when raining. We've also stopped at big box stores like home depot/target just to wander around or find a small toy etc.

When it's not raining, if you go 101, worth a stop at Tatum's Garden, 2 miles south of the Salinas supercharger. Huge outdoor play structures with ramps, castles, etc, it's great. I've started tagging favorite playgrounds on Google Maps. Maybe we should make a Kid Friendly Tesla map for road trips =)
