This year's race is shaping up to be interesting. Audi confirms R18 hybrid as part of 2012 endurance racing program Toyota upgrades limited TS030 Hybrid racing program to full WEC entry Shame Peugeot pulled out, I was looking forward to the three way battle. Hopefully there will be a demo of this one too: Green Car Congress: Drayson Racing and Lola unveil battery-electric Le Mans prototype; application of structural composite batteries
Great story! If the racing associations allow EVs and hybrids to strut their stuff head-to-head against ICE racers, it won't be long until ICE loses its position as the premiere drivetrain for short- to medium-range racing. The gearheads will fight to the bitter end, but their fate is sealed.
Le Mans has always been very progressive. You can bet as soon as an EV that can do 12 laps and battery swap/rapid charge is ready, it will be there.
With the EVs and different flavours of hybrids (not to mention Nissan's ultra-lightweight deltawing) at this year's Le Mans, it sure is going to be an interesting race to see which flavour of electrification and efficiency comes out on top. I will be going for the 7th straight year in a row. Are any of you Voltheads interested in attending? I've confirmed there are still places in a top trackside campsite with electric hookups.
