If you lease a Tesla (any model) and pay the extra $8,000 for the full self driving... when you turn in the car does that stay with you or the car? (Example if you decide to less a new car or buy another Tesla does the full self driving stay credited to you or do you lose it to the original car)? Is it transferable?

Thanks

FSD is not owned by the person, but by the VIN. This means when you turn in your vehicle, FSD goes with the VIN or the Vehicle, and the next owner may get it (in some cases Tesla removes it and the new owner may need to purchase it again).

You as the original owner don't own any of the software upgrades you purchase. The VIN owns all of them.

This is not new. Tivo did it early on with their first units they sold back in the early 2000. If you purchase their lifetime guide, then it was NOT owned by you, but the serial number of the device, so it moved with the device.

Dang that really sucks. That’s $8,000 lost then every time you lease another Tesla. It should be transferable as long as you keep leasing with Tesla.
That's why you should always add the FSD when initially getting the lease not afterwards. The $8k is part of the car's MSRP. You will only pay the lease depreciation value, so you will only pay a fraction of the $8K – the rest of the FSD price will be in the residual of the lease. Obviously, if you buy the car after the lease expires, then you are paying the full FSD price.

Thanks for the information. Didn’t think of it like that. So I compared exact model Y’s (one with and one without FSD). I calculated you would pay an extra $107 a month... so $3,852 total extra over the three year lease.

What are the odds Tesla would add FSD to a subscription service this year? If they did guessing it would be around $100 a month to add, if the lease is adding it for around $107 a month extra...

Slim to none IMO.

The value proposition just isn't there for Tesla if offering a subscription keeps even a tiny fraction of people from ponying up the full $8k.
