The Tesla documentary Mad Electricity told of a story where Tesla/Westinghouse won the bid to electrify the Chicago worlds fair, and Edison was so off-put that he refused to let them use _his_ electric light bulb (like the one at the Livermore firehouse). Tesla responding by inventing altenative light bulbs including fluorescent lights.

I like the way they look.
True, they do look cool, but I think that most of these layouts could be recreated more economically with a conventional lamp, perforated metal and a bunch of plastic tubes.
